## The jali walls

The defining move on this mandir is that the doors are not solid. Both leaves are cut right through in a repeating quatrefoil jali, drilled and chiselled out of the slab so the stone reads as a screen rather than a wall, and a matching lattice forms the rear panel. Set a light behind that panel and the whole back of the shrine turns into a warm grid of small openings, the way a jharokha screen in a Rajasthani haveli behaves once the sun drops. Above the doors sit a scalloped multifoil arch and a fluted dome with a stepped finial, flanked by four corner kalash spires. The plinth carries two carved bands, a running vine at the top step and a row of lotus petals at the base, giving the piece weight where it meets the floor.

## The stone

Vietnam White Marble is quarried around Thanh Hoa province in northern Vietnam and has become the working white for pierced carving of this kind. It reads bright and neutral with a cool, clean undertone, closer to porcelain than the warm cream of Makrana, with a fine crystalline grain and very little veining. Two properties matter for a jali mandir. The tight grain lets the lattice bars be taken down thin without the stone crumbling at the crossings, which is exactly where a coarser marble gives way. And the low warmth in the stone keeps light passing through the panel honest rather than turning it yellow. The finish is honed: matte, with broad soft highlights and no mirror reflection, so the lattice reads as depth and shadow instead of glare.

## Living with a 42-inch mandir

At 42 inches tall and about 23 inches across, this mandir sits between a tabletop shrine and a full floor-standing temple. It is tall enough to stand on the floor of a pooja room and read as architecture, and short enough to go on a low chowki if you want the murti at seated eye level during aarti. Depth is roughly 12 inches, which takes a deity of about 12 to 14 inches with a thali in front of it, without eating an apartment alcove. The doors open outward, so leave clearance on both sides. The mandir arrives without a deity. The inner chamber is left plain, so a Ganesh, a Lakshmi-Ganesh pair or a family murti can be placed there and changed over the years.

## Installing it and lighting it

A 42-inch marble mandir needs its weight planned for first: around 84 kg, which any normal floor carries without trouble but which is a two-person lift and too much for a lightweight console. Level the surface before setting it down, because marble does not forgive a rocking base. For the backlight, a warm-white LED strip or a small concealed lamp behind the rear jali is the usual arrangement, run at low output so the light comes through the lattice rather than flaring out of it, with the wiring kept behind the piece and away from the chamber where a diya sits. Cleaning is a dry or barely damp cloth; the pierced sections hold dust and a soft brush reaches into them better. Keep camphor and oil lamps on a metal thali, not on the stone.

## Make it yours

Sizes for this mandir run from an 18-inch tabletop shrine up to a five-foot floor-standing piece, and the jali pattern is not fixed: the quatrefoil grid can be swapped for a floral or geometric screen. We design it with you, brief the sculptor who carves it, and follow it through to delivery at your door, so a different dome profile, a deeper chamber for a taller murti, or a cable channel cut into the back panel all get settled before the block is opened. Send your room dimensions on WhatsApp and we will work back from there.
