## A shrine that hangs on the wall

A gokhla is a niche, and this derasar is built as one: a single deep sanctum carried on a concealed bracket, with nothing standing on the floor beneath it. The gabhara is closed by two hinged jali-cut doors that swing back flat against a pierced lattice surround, so the screen wraps the niche on three sides and the wall behind reads faintly through the perforation instead of ending in a blank face. Across the lintel runs a carved frieze of the eight ashtamangal (the swastika, the shrivatsa, the nandyavarta, the paired fish, the mirror, the water-pot, the throne and the powder-vase), and a siddhachakra medallion is set into the crest above it. A small shikhar with a kalash finial, flanked by two urn finials over an openwork parapet, finishes the top: the whole shikharbandhi vocabulary, compressed into something with the footprint of a picture frame.

## The stone, and why the lattice needs it

Vietnam white marble comes out of Thanh Hoa province and reads cooler and cleaner than Makrana: a neutral porcelain white with a fine, compact crystalline grain and only hairline veining. That grain is what makes this much open lattice safe to cut: each jali crossing is drilled and then pared through by hand, and a coarser, more fissile stone chips at the crossings. The sculptor roughs out the block, hollows the sanctum, carves the cusped arch and its colonnettes, and pierces the screens last, while the piece is still heavy enough to sit steady on the bench. Every surface is left honed, a soft matte that will not hold the ghost of a milk or water mark the way a mirror polish does. The door hinges and the small pulls are bronze hardware, sourced and fitted to the carved leaves rather than made in stone.

## Mounting it, and the daily prakshal

The derasar hangs from a concealed bracket that has to be anchored into studs or masonry, never drywall alone, because it weighs around 26 kg with the doors on. Set the sill a little above chest height and the murti sits at eye level when you stand to it. A shallow prakshal channel is cut into the sanctum floor and falls to a pull-out tray under the plinth; the tray lifts clean out to be emptied, which is the whole point of the design in a flat where the nearest drain is a room away. It is supplied without a murti, so a pratima you already keep can move straight in. A warm LED strip tucked behind the arch soffit lights the niche without touching the stone above it.

## Where it suits

This is the derasar for a home with no floor to give: an apartment, a condo, a study corner, a bedroom wall in a rented flat where nothing may be drilled into the ground. At 24 inches tall and about 16 wide it holds a wall on its own, and it sits just as well above a console or a low chest that can carry the thali and the cloth. The sanctum takes a seated Tirthankar pratima of roughly 5 to 7 inches comfortably.

Every piece is made to order, so the size, the jali pattern and the depth of the niche can all be set to your wall. A gold-leaf shikhar, a coloured-stone inlay border around the arch, a second gokhla alongside the first, or your family name cut into the plinth band are all routine changes. Send a photograph of the wall and the measurements and we will work the design back from there.
