## What this piece is

A jali wall sconce works on one idea: light is more interesting after it has passed through stone. The marble panel is cut edge to edge as a pierced lattice (a repeating star-and-hexagon field held inside a plain carved border), and it stands proud of a slim brass backplate rather than sitting flat on the wall. The gap between the two is where the light lives. Lit, the openings read as bright points, the stone between them glows faintly from within, and a soft wash spills around the panel onto the plaster behind it. Unlit, it reads as a carved white panel with a thin gold edge, which is the other half of why one ends up in a hallway. At 12 inches tall this is a single-panel size, meant for a wall beside a door, a stair landing or a pooja alcove.

## The stone, and why it glows

The panel is cut from Vietnam White Marble, quarried around Da Nang and worked here in Rajasthan. It is a clean, cool, neutral white with a fine even grain that stays quiet instead of competing with the lattice. That evenness matters more in a backlit piece than in a solid one: a heavy vein would read as a dark bar the moment light came through from behind. Marble is calcite, and calcite is translucent. Cut thin, as the webs between the openings are, it carries a little light rather than blocking it, so the stone lifts to a warm ivory while the openings stay bright. That is the material doing the work, not a coating on it.

## How the lattice is cut

Jali, the pierced stone screen, is a Rajasthani and Mughal habit before it is a decorative one: the jharokha windows of Amber and Fatehpur Sikri exist to move air and break glare while keeping a room private. The geometry here follows that lineage, a star-and-hexagon repeat set inside an unornamented border so the pattern has somewhere to stop. The sculptors we work with in Jaipur mark the grid on the slab, drill each opening, then open it to shape with chisels and rifflers, working from both faces so the edges stay crisp front and back. The webs are the delicate part, cut thick enough to survive a wall fixing and thin enough to pass light. The surface is taken to a soft satin polish that holds a low sheen without turning the panel into a mirror.

## Living with it

A hallway is the honest use: a jali sconce lights a corridor at eye level without a ceiling fixture, and the pattern it throws does the decorating. In a pooja room it gives ambient light beside the mandir where a bare bulb would be wrong. In a living room, a pair flanking a console or a bed reads as architecture rather than as a lamp. Mounting is a two-part job. The brass backplate takes two fixings into the wall and carries the light source, a low-voltage warm-white LED strip in the channel behind the marble; the panel then hangs on the backplate, standing about two inches proud. A warm-white strip suits this stone; a cold blue-white one flattens it. Have a local electrician make the final connection and site the driver in the wall box or above a false ceiling.

## Making it yours

Size is the first thing people change: the same lattice scales to an 18-inch panel for a taller wall, or to a mirrored pair flanking a doorway. The geometry can change too: a finer star repeat, a floral vine in place of the hexagons, a cusped arch outline instead of the plain rectangle. The backplate can stay brass or go to blackened metal for a darker room. Tell us the wall, the height you have and the light you want off it; we will draw it with you, price it, and follow it through to your door.
