## What an empty jhula is for

A jhula is the swing a household rocks its Laddu Gopal in, and this one is made with the seat deliberately bare. Most marble jhulas are carved as a single object with the infant Krishna already worked into the cradle, which means the swing and the deity are one piece of stone and can never be separated. Here the seat is a vacant platform, an empty carved bed cut so that a small Laddu Gopal murti of roughly four to six inches sits down into it. Families who already keep a murti they have done seva to for years, often one handed down, or one dressed every morning in fresh poshak, do not want a second Krishna carved for them in stone. They want somewhere to place the one they already have. That is the whole purpose of this jhula.

## The stone, and the brass

Vietnam White Marble is quarried around Thanh Hoa province and has been a common export stone into Indian workshops since the 2000s. It reads cooler and whiter than Makrana, closer to a clean neutral white than to cream, which suits a piece like this where slim uprights and open lattice need to look crisp rather than heavy. The marble takes a soft satin polish here, a low sheen that feels smooth to the hand without the wet, mirrored look of a fully buffed surface. The chains and the S-hook are brass rather than stone. They are sourced and fitted at the workshop, not cast by us, and chosen in a thin link so the seat hangs from four lines without visual bulk. Brass against white marble is the ordinary pairing in a home mandir, so the fittings sit naturally beside a diya or a bell.

## The jali work

Jali is pierced lattice, stone cut clean through so that light passes it. On this jhula the lattice runs across both spandrels of the arch, filling the space between the cusped inner curve and the outer frame, and again across the back panel of the seat. Every opening is drilled first, then opened out and squared by hand with fine points, because a lattice at this scale chips if it is rushed. The diamonds are cut to read evenly from a metre away, which is the distance a mandir shelf is actually looked at from. A small kalash finial tops the arch above a carved rosette at its crown, the two uprights carry lotus-petal collars at capital and base, and the plinth is a stepped slab with a band of petal moulding worked around its face.

## Sizing it for your mandir

At fifteen inches tall this is a shelf piece rather than a floor piece. It wants about a foot of clear width, five inches of depth, and enough height above it that the finial is not crowded by the shelf overhead. The seat is cut for a murti of roughly four to six inches; a taller Laddu Gopal will read out of proportion against the arch and can foul the chains when the swing moves. It weighs around seven kilos, so a wall-hung shelf needs proper anchoring, while a stone or wooden mandir platform carries it without thought. Set against a plain back wall the jali shows best, since the openings need something behind them to read against. A different height, a different stone, or hand-painted meenakari detail on the arch are all open to you: message us on WhatsApp with your mandir's measurements.
