## The Vietnam marble and how it is worked

The Lalbaug Ganpati is usually seen from a distance: across a queue, over a barricade, framed by a pandal that dwarfs him. This 30-inch group brings the whole family close: Ganesha at the centre of a broad lion-flanked simhasan, Riddhi to one side and Siddhi to the other. It is cut from Vietnam white marble, quarried in the Thanh Hoa belt and finished in Jaipur. The stone reads a cooler, cleaner white than Makrana, closer to porcelain than to cream, and it holds a crisp edge, which matters on a piece carrying this much ornament.

Work begins with a single block, roughed down under heavy chisels until the throne, the three seated figures and the plinth read as one mass. Detail comes later and comes slowly: the tiered mukut, the beaded haars layered across Ganesha's chest, the saris and jewellery on the two consorts, the lion heads at the throne flanks. Faces, hands and drapery folds are never left to machine tooling. Those are hand-finished throughout, then taken through eight grades of abrasive to a satin polish that stops short of mirror.

## The Lalbaug markers, with Riddhi and Siddhi seated

Every marker of the Lalbaug form is here. Four arms, no more: a bowl of modak in one lower hand, the abhaya blessing in the other, the upper pair raised with his attributes. The trunk curls to his left, the right tusk is broken, and the mushak sits alert at the foot of the throne. Riddhi and Siddhi, his consorts in Puranic tradition, are seated a step lower on either side in full sari and ornament, which keeps Ganesha the tallest and presiding figure. It is the arrangement the Lalbaug mandal has held to since 1934, when the market traders of Peru Chawl installed their first Ganpati.

## Room for a 30-inch group, and other stones

A 30-inch group needs room to be read properly: roughly three feet of clear width, and a chowki or shelf at chest height so the faces sit near eye level rather than below it. In a dedicated mandir room it becomes the whole focus; in a larger living room it works against a plain wall with nothing stacked above it. Households that keep this form usually front it with a low brass tray for flowers and set the diya at the base, never overhead.

Also carved in Makrana white marble and black marble, and with 22k gold-leaf detailing on the mukut and ornaments if you want the festival dress. Sizes run from 12 inches upward on commission, so message us on WhatsApp for stone samples and lead times.
