## A derasar drawn in a modern idiom

Most ghar derasars are miniatures of a shikharbandhi temple, with a spire, a dhwaja and tier on tier of moulding: the whole silhouette of a Palitana shrine shrunk onto a console table. This one is deliberately not. The roofline is flat, there is no shikhar at all, and the planes are left unmoulded, so the piece reads as clean rectangular masses standing on a low rectilinear plinth. The ornament is rationed on purpose: a single carved siddhachakra medallion centred on the upper face, and one band of the eight ashtamangal cut in low relief across the lintel (the swastika, the shrivatsa, the nandyavarta, the paired fish, the mirror, the water-pot, the throne and the powder-vase). A fine shadow-gap reveal runs around the gokhla opening so the niche sits free of the frame instead of inside a moulded surround. The restraint is the design, not a shortfall of one.

## The stone, and what a plain surface demands

Vietnam white marble comes out of Thanh Hoa province and reads cooler than Makrana, a neutral, near-porcelain white with a compact crystalline grain and hairline veining rather than the warm grey threads Rajasthani marble carries. That matters more on a piece like this than on a heavily carved one. Ornament forgives a surface; a flat unbroken plane forgives nothing, and every ripple, soft edge and shift of tone shows. The faces are worked down and honed flat, and the arrises (the long edges where two planes meet) are cut crisp and left crisp, because a modern silhouette lives on them. The whole piece is finished in a matte hone: a soft low-sheen surface with broad highlights and no mirror reflection, which suits the geometry and will not hold the ghost of a water mark the way a polish does.

## Doors, gokhla and the daily prakshal

The gabhara is closed by two hinged doors carried on visible bronze pin hinges, each leaf cut through in a fine pierced net so the sanctum breathes when they are shut, and shown here standing fully open. Behind them the niche is deep and plain. The walls are left bare so a pratima reads against still stone with nothing competing behind it. A shallow prakshal channel is cut into the sanctum floor and falls forward, so abhishek water runs clear of the murti's seat instead of pooling under it. The hinges and the small pulls are bronze hardware, sourced and fitted to the carved leaves; everything else on the piece is stone. It is supplied without a murti, and the gokhla takes a seated Tirthankar pratima of roughly 7 to 9 inches. Every symbol carved on it is Jain; nothing on this derasar is borrowed from another tradition.

## Where it suits

This is the derasar for a home that was designed, where a gilded shikhar would argue with every other line in the room: a city apartment, a condo, a study corner with plaster walls and daylight. At 33 inches tall and about 22 wide it stands on the floor in a small room, or on a low console or chest in a larger one; at roughly 62 kg it wants a solid base rather than a hollow cabinet top. Set the sill near seated eye level and the murti meets you when you sit to it. A warm LED strip concealed above the niche lights the sanctum without lighting the face of the stone.

Every piece is made to order by the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur, so the height, the width of the gokhla and the depth of the sanctum can all be set to the room. Carrying the ashtamangal band across the sides instead of the front alone, leaving the lintel entirely plain, adding a second shallow shelf below the sill for the thali, or cutting your family name into the plinth band are all routine changes. Send the dimensions of the space and we will work the design back from there.
