## The Mahad swaroop

Varadvinayak is the fourth halt on the Ashtavinayak circuit, in the village of Mahad in Raigad district, a short turn off the Mumbai-Pune road near Khopoli. The name reads plainly as the giver of the boon, and the murti enshrined there is a seated Ganpati whose trunk turns to his own left. The shrine is small and domed, with a golden pinnacle and stone elephants at its four corners, and it is one of the few on the circuit where a devotee may step into the sanctum and place the offering themselves rather than hand it across to a priest. This piece follows that swaroop rather than a generic seated form: four arms, the round belly, the single broken right tusk, a modak cupped in the lower left hand and the right hand lifted in blessing, with the mushak turned inward at the base.

## The lamp niche in the base

What this piece adds to a plain seated Ganpati sits below the lotus. A small arched niche is cut into the plinth, deep enough to hold a working diya, and it recalls the Nandadeep at Mahad, the oil lamp the temple has kept alight since 1892. On a home mandir shelf the niche does real work. It gives the evening lamp a fixed place at the foot of the murti instead of crowding it beside the base, and the arch bounces the flame back up across the lotus petals, which is when the carving on them reads best. A running scroll border wraps the plinth on all four faces, chiselled by hand rather than routed, so the pattern breathes slightly from one corner to the next.

## The stone

Vietnam White Marble comes from the quarries around Thanh Hoa province and has become a working white stone for murti carving over the past two decades. Its grain is fine and crystalline, and its undertone is genuinely neutral: cooler and cleaner than Makrana cream, without the blue-grey cast the Italian whites carry. Neutrality matters on a face this size: at 15 inches the eyes, the ear folds and the beading on the necklace all have to read at once, and a warm-toned stone tends to soften them under lamp light. The surface is taken to a soft satin polish rather than a mirror, which keeps a low sheen and lets light travel a short way into the calcite before it returns. That is the property that makes marble look lit from within rather than coated.

## Sizing it for your mandir

At 15 inches tall, roughly 8 inches across and 7 inches deep, the murti sits in the band most home mandirs are built around: tall enough to preside over the main shelf, small enough that a standard mandir opening clears the crown without a squeeze. Weight is about 11 kg, so it belongs on a fixed shelf rather than a floating bracket. Leave four or five inches of clear height above the crown. The usual guidance is that the murti's eyes fall at or above the eye level of a seated devotee, which is easier to get right when the piece is not pressed up against the roof of the mandir. Marble at this scale asks for nothing beyond a dry cloth and keeping oil and vermilion off the polished faces.

## Make it yours

Every piece is made to order. The carving is done for you by the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur: we design it with you, brief the sculptor, and follow it through to your door. The lamp niche can be widened for a larger diya, dropped in favour of a plain moulded plinth, or repeated on the two side faces. The same swaroop can be taken up to 24 or 36 inches for a dedicated pooja room, or cut in Makrana white marble if you prefer the warmer stone. Send us the shelf dimensions on WhatsApp and we will work back from there.
