Vajrasana: a Buddha in Absolute Black granite

Vajrasana is the seated meditation posture with both soles turned upward and the hands resting in the lap — the pose of the Buddha at the moment of practice rather than of teaching or blessing. It is the most static of the major forms, and in a dark, uniform stone that stillness is the whole effect.

This one is carved in Absolute Black granite: deep, even black with no veining and no figure in the stone at all. That uniformity is the reason the material suits this pose. With nothing patterned to look at, the eye follows the silhouette and the robe folds instead, and the calm of the face carries at a distance in a way it would not against a busy stone. The finish is matte with subtle tool marks left in place.

At 48 inches it is a garden centrepiece. Granite is the most weather-indifferent stone here — it takes sun, monsoon and frost without change — so it can go where marble would need more thought: an open lawn, the head of a path, a moss bed with a shallow water basin nearby. Dark stone reads best with space around it and light from the side; set against a pale wall or gravel, the outline does the work.
