Ram Sita murtis — choosing the composition

How many figures you would like on the base shapes everything that follows — the size, the price and where the murti can sit. It is the best place to begin.

The compositions carved here

• Standing pair — Ram with his longbow and right hand in abhaya mudra, Sita at his left holding a lotus. The most ordered composition, and the most flexible: it fits a home mandir shelf where a full court will not.
• Vivah (wedding) pair — the marriage form, often with Sita offering the garland. The natural choice as a wedding gift, and increasingly commissioned by couples for their own home.
• Standing trio — Ram at centre, Sita with a lotus, Lakshman with the arrow.
• Ram Darbar, three figures with Hanuman — the pair with Hanuman kneeling at their feet in anjali mudra, gazing up in seva. Note the deliberate unequal heights: Ram tallest, Hanuman kneeling and smaller. That hierarchy is correct iconography: Ram is carved tallest and Hanuman kneeling in seva, exactly as the tradition prescribes.
• Ram Darbar, the full four-figure court — Ram centre with bow and abhaya mudra, Sita with lotus, Lakshman with bow, Hanuman kneeling in devotion. The complete composition, and the grandest of the Darbar forms.
• Seated Pattabhishekam (coronation) — Ram and Sita enthroned side by side on a carved throne, Ram in abhaya with the bow at his side. The regal form, and a strong choice where the murti is a room's focal point rather than a shelf piece.
• Seated on a carved singhasan throne in full Darbar bearing.

A practical note on cost: pricing scales with the number of figures and the depth of detail in each. A four-figure Ram Darbar typically runs 1.8–2.5 times a two-figure standing pair. If a full court is out of budget, a common and entirely legitimate route is to commission the pair now and add matching figures later — provided you specify the same stone and scale at the outset so the additions match. The iconography we follow

Ram should carry the longbow (Kodanda) and hold abhaya mudra; Sita stands at his left with a lotus; Lakshman carries a bow or arrow and is slightly shorter than Ram; Hanuman kneels. On a multi-figure base the figures are composed as one group, with the gazes and the spacing worked out together so the Darbar reads as a single scene.

Choosing the stone

Every murti is made to order. Tilak Mandirwala works in five stones:

• Makrana white marble — the traditional temple white, warm and dense. The classic choice for a Ram Darbar and the base for hand-painted work.
• Vietnam white marble — cooler and brighter, fine even grain. It holds crisp detail well, which matters on a multi-figure piece where a bow, a garland and four sets of ornaments all compete for definition.
• Black stone — mirror-polishable and imposing; strong for a coronation or throne composition.
• Dholpur pink sandstone — warm, matte, weathers well. For a courtyard or a sheltered outdoor shrine.
• Cast marble dust — lighter and more affordable, and it holds detail, so it suits smaller pairs.

Size and placement

The pieces here run from 2 feet to 4 feet — this collection sits larger than most, because multi-figure compositions need width and cannot be shrunk indefinitely without losing the faces.

• 24–30 inches — a standing pair in a home mandir or a dedicated pooja room.
• 36 inches — a trio or a compact Darbar.
• 42–48 inches — a full four-figure Ram Darbar, an entrance, or a temple installation.

Measure the width as well as the height before ordering a Darbar. A four-figure base is considerably wider than it is tall, and it is the dimension people forget.

Vastu and direction

• Install so the worshipper faces east or north, which usually places the murti against a west or south wall.
• The north-east quadrant is traditional for a household shrine.
• Never directly on the floor — a chowki, plinth or mandir shelf, always.

When people commission one

Ram Navami is the peak, and Diwali brings a second wave — the festival marks Ram's return to Ayodhya, which makes a Ram Darbar a natural Diwali installation. Every piece is carved to order, so allow lead time ahead of the festival. Beyond that, a Vivah pair is a popular wedding commission, and a Ram Darbar is a traditional griha pravesh installation for a new home.

Caring for the murti

• Dust with a dry, soft cloth, and pay attention to the recesses between figures where dust collects on a multi-figure base.
• No acidic cleaners — lemon, vinegar and bathroom products permanently etch polished marble.
• Wipe ghee, oil and kumkum promptly; left to sit they stain.
• Hand-painted pieces should only ever be dusted dry.
