Custom Made Shiva Statues in Marble Stone

The many forms of Shiva — and which one belongs in your home

No deity is carved across a wider range than Shiva: ascetic, cosmic dancer, householder, formless pillar. The forms carry genuinely different meanings, and choosing between them is the real decision here.

The forms carved in this collection

• Meditating Shiva on Kailash — seated cross-legged in dhyana, matted jata piled high, the crescent moon, the Ganga issuing from his hair, a serpent at the neck, the third eye closed. The most ordered form, and the one most at home in a pooja room.
• Nataraja — the ananda tandava, the dance of bliss within a ring of fire, one foot raised, the dwarf Apasmara underfoot. The most technically demanding of the Shiva forms to carve: the ring, the raised leg and the flying jata all have to hold together in stone. Apasmara beneath the foot is canonical iconography — ego subdued, not violence.
• Ardhanarishvara — the composite form, half Shiva and half Parvati split down the vertical axis, one side with matted hair and tiger skin, the other with a coiffed head, an earring and a sari. Carved well it is one of the most sophisticated images in Indian art.
• Uma-Maheshwara — Shiva and Parvati seated together on Kailash. The householder form, and a natural wedding or anniversary commission.
• Neelkanth — seated holding the halahala poison, throat blue. Traditionally finished with a hand-painted blue throat accent on white marble.
• Pashupatinath — seated cross-legged with damru and trishul, lord of creatures.
• Standing with trishul and damru, right hand in abhaya. The straightforward protective form.
• Adiyogi — the contemporary meditative bust or face. Pared back and modern; it suits an interior where a traditional murti would feel out of place, and it has become one of the most requested pieces of the last few years.
• Shiva Lingam on a yoni base — the aniconic form. The marble Shiva Lingam collection covers these in full, including Panchmukhi, Naga and Janeudhari variants and complete sets with Nandi.

Recurring attributes worth checking on any Shiva murti: the trishul, the damru, the crescent moon, the third eye, the serpent Vasuki, the rudraksha mala, and Ganga in the hair. A murti missing most of these is generic rather than iconographic.

Choosing the stone

Unless a piece's own page says otherwise, a murti here is carved to order. Tilak Mandirwala works in five stones:

• Black stone — the classical sacred colour for Shiva and the traditional temple choice. A black Nataraja or Adiyogi makes a striking choice for a contemporary interior, and black hides the water-marking that comes with regular abhishekam.
• Makrana white marble — warm temple white, dense. The conventional home-mandir stone and the base for a hand-painted Neelkanth.
• Vietnam white marble — cooler and brighter with a fine even grain; it holds the crisp detail of matted jata, a serpent's scales and a ring of fire particularly well.
• Dholpur pink sandstone — warm, matte, weathers well. The pick for a courtyard or garden shrine.
• Cast marble dust — lighter and more affordable, holds detail, suited to smaller pieces.

Finishes run from honed matte through satin to full mirror polish. Matte flatters the depth of a Nataraja's undercutting; mirror polish suits a meditating figure in white marble.

Size and placement

The pieces here run from 15 inches to 4 feet:

• 15–24 inches — a home mandir shelf, and the usual size for a meditating Shiva.
• 30–36 inches — a dedicated pooja room, or a living-room niche where a Nataraja or Adiyogi becomes the focal point.
• 40–48 inches — an entrance, a hall or a temple installation.

Vastu and abhishekam

• Install so the worshipper faces east or north; the north-east quadrant is traditional for a home shrine.
• Nataraja is often placed in a living or performance space rather than the pooja room — it is as much a work of art as an object of worship, and many households treat it that way.
• Never directly on the floor — a chowki, plinth or mandir shelf.
• If the murti will receive regular abhishekam, plan the drainage before it is installed. A Lingam is supplied with a jaladhari spout for exactly this; for a figural murti, a shallow tray beneath the plinth saves the surface it sits on.

When people commission one

Mahashivratri is the peak, and Shravan brings a second wave. A commissioned piece is carved to order, so allow lead time ahead of the festival rather than ordering into it. Beyond that, an Uma-Maheshwara is a common wedding gift, and an Adiyogi bust has become a frequent corporate and housewarming present.

Caring for the murti

• Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Marble is porous and does not want regular washing.
• No acidic cleaners — lemon, vinegar and bathroom products etch polished stone permanently.
• Wipe milk, ghee, honey and kumkum promptly after abhishekam; milk in particular marks pale marble if left.
• Hand-painted accents such as a Neelkanth's blue throat should only ever be dusted dry.
• For sandstone outdoors, an occasional plain-water rinse is enough. Never pressure-wash carved detail.
