Choosing a Krishna murti

Krishna is depicted across a wider emotional range than any other deity — infant, cowherd, lover, charioteer, god — and the form you choose changes what the murti means in your home. It is worth deciding deliberately rather than defaulting to the first flute-playing figure you see.

The forms carved in this collection

• Murli Manohar — standing in tribhanga, the triple-bend pose, flute raised to the lips, peacock-feather crown. This is the definitive Krishna and the most ordered form here. The tribhanga is also the test of the carving: the three bends at neck, waist and knee should flow as one curve, not read as three separate kinks.
• Gopala — standing with the flute, a calf beside him. The cowherd, and a gentler, more pastoral piece.
• Bal Gopal — the seated infant holding a ball of butter, serene and smiling. The most commonly gifted form, and the one most often kept as a household deity dressed and cared for daily.
• Crawling Bal Gopal (Makhan Chor) — the butter thief on hands and knees, a South Indian favourite.
• Govardhan-dhari — standing with Mount Govardhan lifted on one raised finger, sheltering the village from Indra's storm. A demanding composition and a striking one.
• Kaliya Mardan — dancing atop the multi-hooded serpent Kaliya, one foot raised, flute in hand. A composition full of movement.
• Radha-Krishna standing pair — Krishna with the flute in tribhanga, Radha at his left, both crowned. The most-requested gifting and wedding piece.
• Krishna seated on a full-bloom lotus, flute in hands, meditative.
• Contemporary minimalist Krishna — a smooth, stylised standing form with a simplified crown, for interiors where a traditional murti would sit awkwardly.

Two attributes should be present on any Krishna worth buying: the peacock feather in the crown and the flute (bansuri). On a Radha-Krishna pair, check that the two figures are carved to a consistent scale and that Radha stands at Krishna's left — a pair that looks subtly wrong almost always fails on one of those two points.

Choosing the stone

Every murti is made to order. Tilak Mandirwala works in five stones:

• Makrana white marble — warm, dense temple white. The traditional choice, and the standard base for a hand-painted piece.
• Vietnam white marble — cooler and brighter, with a fine even grain that holds the fine detail of a crown, a flute and jewellery work crisply.
• Black stone — mirror-polishable and dramatic. It carries a particular resonance for Krishna, whose name means "the dark one", and a black-stone Murli Manohar is one of the most striking pieces in the whole catalogue.
• Dholpur pink sandstone — warm, matte, weathers well. Suited to a courtyard or a sheltered outdoor shrine.
• Cast marble dust — lighter and more affordable, holds detail well, good for smaller altar pieces.

The polychrome option

Krishna is one of the few deities regularly finished in traditional hand-painted polychrome — the blue complexion, a yellow pitambar dhoti, gold detailing on the crown and jewellery. It is done on a white marble base, and it is how most North Indian households keep him. The alternative is to leave the stone bare and let the carving carry the piece, which suits a contemporary interior. Both are available; decide before carving begins, because the finish influences how the sculptor treats surface detail.

Size and placement

The pieces here run from 12 inches to 4 feet:

• 12–18 inches — a home mandir shelf. The most commonly ordered range, and the usual size for a Bal Gopal that will be dressed daily.
• 24–30 inches — a dedicated pooja room or a living-room niche.
• 36–48 inches — an entrance, a hall, or a temple installation.

Vastu and direction

• Install so the worshipper faces east or north — usually meaning the murti sits against a west or south wall.
• The north-east quadrant is the traditional home for a household shrine.
• A Radha-Krishna pair is conventionally placed in the bedroom or a shared living space when the intent is marital harmony, rather than in the formal pooja room.
• Never directly on the floor — a chowki, plinth or mandir shelf, always.

When people commission one

Janmashtami is the peak, and a Bal Gopal or Laddu Gopal ordered for it needs lead time — every piece is carved to order, so ordering into the festival rather than ahead of it is the usual mistake. Beyond that, a Radha-Krishna pair is a popular wedding and anniversary gift, and a Krishna murti is a standard griha pravesh present.

Caring for the murti

• Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Marble is porous and does not want regular washing.
• No acidic cleaners — lemon, vinegar and bathroom products etch polished marble permanently.
• Wipe ghee, oil and kumkum promptly; left to sit they stain.
• Hand-painted polychrome pieces should only ever be dusted dry — never wiped with a damp cloth, which lifts the paint over time.
