Which Hanuman are you commissioning?

Hanuman is carved in more emotionally distinct forms than most deities — heroic, devotional, ferocious, childlike — and they are not interchangeable. The form you choose sets the entire character of the space it goes into.

The forms carved in this collection

• Veer Hanuman — the heroic stance, gada (mace) shouldered or raised overhead, tail curled upward, chest forward. The strength form, and the most ordered. Right for an entrance, a gym, or anywhere the intent is protection and courage.
• Standing blessing (abhaya mudra), often with the gada held at rest. Calmer than Veer while keeping the martial attribute. The best all-purpose choice for a home mandir.
• Panchmukhi Hanuman — five-faced, combining Hanuman with Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha and Hayagriva. Each face guards a direction. A powerful and visually commanding piece, traditionally installed for comprehensive protection.
• Hridaya Darshan — the chest-tearing form, revealing Ram and Sita within his heart. The single most devotional image in the Hanuman canon, and the one that moves people most.
• Sankat Mochan — kneeling in devotion, hands folded. Humility rather than power. Often chosen for a personal shrine.
• Flying with the Sanjeevani mountain — carrying the whole peak aloft. A composition full of movement and the hardest to carve, because the sculptor has to keep a heavy mass convincingly airborne.
• Suryamukhi Bal Hanuman — the child leaping toward the sun, mistaking it for a fruit.
• Bal Hanuman — the child form generally, gentler and popular for children's rooms.
• Raja Hanuman — enthroned, crowned, in royal bearing.
• Seated reading the Ramayana, and seated dhyana — the scholar and the meditator, the quietest forms in the collection.

Choosing the stone

Every piece is made to order. Tilak Mandirwala works in five stones:

• Makrana white marble — the traditional temple white, warm and dense. The conventional home-mandir choice.
• Vietnam white marble — cooler and brighter, fine even grain. It holds crisp detail well, which matters on a Veer form where the mace, the tail curl and the musculature all compete for definition.
• Black stone — mirror-polishable and imposing. A Veer or Panchmukhi Hanuman in black stone is genuinely striking, and it is the practical choice if the murti will be regularly offered sindoor.
• Dholpur pink sandstone — warm, matte, weathers well. The right stone for a courtyard or an open-air shrine.
• Cast marble dust — lighter and more affordable, holds fine detail, suited to smaller indoor pieces.

Finishes range from matte / soft-honed through satin to full mirror polish.

A practical note on sindoor

Hanuman is traditionally offered sindoor mixed with oil, and many households apply it directly to the murti. Be deliberate about this: oiled sindoor stains white marble deeply and is effectively impossible to remove once it has soaked into the pores. If yours will receive regular sindoor, either commission it in black stone, or plan to apply the offering to a separate small murti or a designated area rather than the whole figure. This is the single most common regret with a white marble Hanuman, and it is entirely avoidable at the commissioning stage.

Size and placement

The pieces here run from 18 inches to 5 feet:

• 18–24 inches — a home mandir or pooja shelf. The most commonly ordered range.
• 30–36 inches — a dedicated pooja room, an entrance niche, or a shop.
• 4–5 feet — a temple installation, a gateway, a courtyard, or a garden. At this scale carving depth matters more than polish, because the piece is read from a distance.

Vastu and direction

Hanuman has his own placement conventions, and they differ from the general rule:

• A south-facing (Dakshinmukhi) Hanuman is the traditional protective installation, guarding against negative influence from that quarter. This is one of the few deities regularly installed facing south on purpose.
• The south-west corner is the other common choice for a home.
• He is frequently placed at an entrance or gate as a guardian.
• Never on the floor. A chowki, a plinth or a mandir shelf, always.

Tuesday and Saturday are his days, and most households mark them with sindoor, a lamp, and the Hanuman Chalisa.

When people commission one

Hanuman Jayanti is the peak, and because every piece is carved to order you should allow lead time ahead of it rather than ordering into it. Beyond the festival, a Hanuman murti is commissioned for a new home as a protective installation, for a gym or an akhara, and very often as a gift marking someone starting something difficult — he is the deity of persistence and service.

Caring for the murti

• Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Marble is porous and does not need washing.
• No acidic cleaners — lemon, vinegar and bathroom products permanently etch polished stone.
• Wipe oil, ghee and kumkum promptly. Sindoor in particular sets fast on pale stone.
• For a sandstone piece outdoors, an occasional plain-water rinse is enough. Never pressure-wash carved detail.

Maharajji and the Hanuman temples

Many families who commission a Hanuman murti come to him through Neem Karoli Baba — Maharajji of Kainchi Dham, who built or restored over a hundred Hanuman temples across north India and sent almost everyone who came to him to the Hanuman Chalisa. Households that keep both usually install Hanuman standing and Maharajji seated in front of him, on a shared plinth or side by side on the same shelf.
