Why Lakshmi and Ganesh are commissioned together
The pairing is not a marketing convenience — it is the standard Diwali installation across most of India, and it has a logic. Ganesh removes the obstacles; Lakshmi brings the prosperity through the opening he makes. Installing one without the other is considered to leave the job half done, which is why almost every home and shop shrine set up for Diwali has both.
The convention that matters: Ganesh sits on Lakshmi's right as you face them. Get this wrong and the piece reads incorrectly to anyone who knows.
How the pair is composed
This is the real choice in this collection, and it changes both the look and the cost:
- A single shared lotus base — both deities seated in padmasana on one carved base, side by side. The most compact option and the most ordered, because it sits neatly on a mandir shelf and moves as one piece.
- Individual lotus thrones on a shared plinth — each deity gets a fully carved throne, the plinth unites them. More presence, more carving, more cost.
- Individual carved pedestals, side by side — the fullest treatment of each figure, rendered in a South Indian temple idiom with heavier ornamentation over a stepped square base.
- A shared singhasan throne with a carved temple-style backrest rising behind both figures, sometimes with pillared framing at the sides. The monumental altar option.
- Framed by a prabhavali arch rising behind both figures — a carved torana that turns the pair into a single composed tableau.
- Contemporary treatment — the canonical forms rendered in clean planes with restrained ornamentation and smooth, uninterrupted silhouettes. For an interior where a traditional murti would sit awkwardly.
The attributes to check
Both are four-armed with canonical attributes. Lakshmi holds lotuses and a kalash, or shows the coin-pouring varada hand. Ganesh holds a modak, shows abhaya mudra, and has the mushak (mouse) at the base and the trunk curled — usually left, the gentler household convention.
On a pair specifically, look at whether the two figures are carved to a consistent scale and ornamentation level. The most common flaw in a cheap pair is two figures that were clearly carved to different levels of care and then set on one base.
Choosing the stone
Every pair is made to order. Tilak Mandirwala works in five stones:
- Makrana white marble — the traditional temple white and the classic Diwali choice; also the standard base for hand-painted work.
- Vietnam white marble — cooler and brighter, fine even grain. It holds crisp detail, which counts on a pair where two sets of ornaments, a kalash, a modak and a mouse all sit within a small footprint.
- Black stone — mirror-polishable, dramatic, and a strong backdrop for gold-leaf detailing.
- Dholpur pink sandstone — warm and matte, weathers well, for a courtyard or semi-open shrine.
- Cast marble dust — lighter and more affordable, holds fine detail, and the sensible pick at the smallest sizes.
Size and placement
The pieces here run from 8 inches to 3 feet — this collection reaches smaller than most, because a shelf pair for a home shrine is the commonest request:
- 8–12 inches — a home mandir shelf, a shop counter, a desk. The most ordered range, and the size most Diwali sets are.
- 18–24 inches — a dedicated pooja room or a reception counter.
- 30–36 inches — an office entrance, a hall, or a temple installation.
Check the width. A side-by-side pair is wider than it is tall, and the shelf it has to sit on is the constraint people forget.
Vastu and direction
- Install so the worshipper faces east or north; the north-east quadrant is the traditional location for a home shrine, and north specifically is associated with wealth.
- Ganesh on Lakshmi's right, as above.
- Both are conventionally installed seated for a home — a seated goddess stays.
- Never directly on the floor — a chowki, plinth or mandir shelf, always.
When people commission one
Diwali overwhelmingly, and specifically for Lakshmi Puja. Orders for these pairs are concentrated around that season, and because every pair is carved to order it needs to be commissioned well ahead rather than in the weeks before the festival. The second cluster is new business openings and griha pravesh, where the pair is the default installation and a common gift.
Caring for the pair
- Dust with a dry, soft cloth, paying attention to the gap between the two figures where dust settles.
- No acidic cleaners — lemon, vinegar and bathroom products etch polished marble permanently.
- Wipe ghee, oil, kumkum and turmeric promptly; both deities receive all four regularly.
- Hand-painted polychrome pieces should only ever be dusted dry.
