About This Piece
Crafted in Makrana white marble, the gold-standard stone for Indian classical sculpture, this Lakshmi-Ganesh pair anchors the household altar with the same calcite-dense stone used in the Taj Mahal and the Dilwara temples of Mount Abu — a quarrying tradition continuous since the 14th century in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan. Makrana reads as a brilliant neutral white with the slightest warm undertone, taking the soft polish to a satin glow that holds detail without the plastic sheen of resin-bonded composites or the cool-blue tint of European marbles. Each pair is hand-finished in our Jaipur workshop. The pair is shaped from a single Makrana block in our Jaipur workshop, moving from rough chisel work through primary form, secondary detail, and progressive hand polishing. Lakshmi's lotus, kalash, and abhaya hand and Ganesha's modak, trunk-blessing, and tusk are all carved by hand — no machine finishing touches the faces, hands, or ornaments. The two lotus thrones are matched for height and base depth so the pair reads balanced when placed side by side. The final soft-polish stage delivers a satin glow that catches diya light without competing with it during pooja. Lakshmi and Ganesha together form the canonical Diwali pooja pair across North India — Lakshmi seated on Ganesha's right hand side, both in four-armed forms holding their traditional attributes. Lakshmi carries a lotus and kalash, hands in abhaya (fearless-blessing) and varada (gift-giving) postures. Ganesha holds his modak and his trunk curves to the left in blessing, with the tusk fragment held in another hand. The pose is rooted in Rajasthani temple tradition — calm, frontal, ready to receive offerings — distinct from the dynamic dancing or scenic narrative forms. At 18 inches each on individual lotus bases, the pair sits at the canonical home-altar scale — comfortable on a standard mandir chowki, low enough for seated worship, substantial enough to anchor a Diwali aarti centerpiece. Traditional Vastu places the pair facing east or north-east in the household pooja room, with sufficient clearance for diya lamps, a small kalash, and a fresh marigold garland during Dhanteras and Diwali. The matched height makes the pair photograph well together for festive imagery, gift presentation, or NRI shipment to family abroad. Available in Makrana white marble at this 18-inch altar size; we also build the pair in 12-inch compact and 30-inch pooja-room centerpiece scales, in Vietnam white marble at a mid-tier price point, and as a singhasan-throne variant for temple-altar settings.
