Choosing a Lakshmi murti

Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, and the forms she is carved in are not decorative variations — each addresses a different aspect of prosperity. Knowing which one you want is the most useful thing to settle before commissioning.

The forms carved in this collection

• Gaja Lakshmi — seated on a lotus, flanked by two elephants pouring water over her in abhisheka. The most auspicious and most ordered form, and the classic choice for a business or a new home. The elephants signify royal power and rainfall, which is to say abundance that actually arrives.
• Dhan Lakshmi — gold coins streaming from the lower hand. The most literal wealth form, and the usual Diwali installation for a shop or an office.
• Standing Mahalakshmi — four-armed on a lotus, in abhaya-varada mudra: one hand granting fearlessness, one granting boons.
• Rajlakshmi — seated regally on an ornate lotus throne. The sovereign form — regal, and carved to command a room.
• Ashtabhuja Mahalakshmi — eight-armed, standing on a lotus.
• Kamala — standing, holding two lotuses. The purest and quietest of the forms.
• Seated padmasana on a lotus — the straightforward home-mandir form.
• Standing with the owl vahana (ulooka) at the base.

Certain attributes should be present on any Lakshmi worth buying: she stands or sits on a lotus, holds lotus blooms, and has at least one hand in the coin-pouring varada gesture. Her canonical attire is a red or pink sari with heavy gold ornamentation — which is why she is one of the deities most often finished in hand-painted polychrome rather than left as bare stone.

Choosing the stone

Every murti is made to order. Tilak Mandirwala works in five stones:

• Makrana white marble — warm, dense temple white. The traditional choice, and the standard base for hand-painted work.
• Vietnam white marble — cooler and brighter, with a fine even grain that holds the fine detail of ornaments, a coin-flow and elephant trunks crisply. Lakshmi is a heavily ornamented deity, so grain quality matters more here than on a plain seated figure.
• Black stone — mirror-polishable and dramatic; gold-leaf detailing reads powerfully against it.
• Dholpur pink sandstone — warm, matte, weathers well. For a courtyard shrine or a semi-open space.
• Cast marble dust — lighter and more affordable, holds fine detail, good for smaller altar pieces.

Size and placement

The pieces here run from 18 inches to 5 feet:

• 18–24 inches — a home mandir or a shop counter shrine. The most commonly ordered range.
• 30–36 inches — a dedicated pooja room, a reception, or an office entrance.
• 4–5 feet — a temple installation, a lobby, or a hall. At this scale carving depth carries the piece more than surface polish.

Vastu and direction

Lakshmi has clearer placement conventions than most deities, and they are worth following:

• Install so the worshipper faces east or north. The north direction is specifically associated with wealth, and a north-facing shrine is the traditional choice for her.
• The north-east quadrant of the home or business is the standard location.
• She is conventionally installed seated rather than standing for a home, on the reasoning that a seated goddess stays. Standing forms are more common in temples and commercial premises.
• Keep her clear of the kitchen, a bathroom wall, or under a staircase.
• Never directly on the floor — a chowki, plinth or mandir shelf.

When people commission one

Diwali dominates, and specifically Lakshmi Puja on the main night — this is when most Lakshmi murtis are commissioned. Because every piece is carved to order, a Diwali murti needs to be commissioned well ahead rather than in the weeks before. Akshaya Tritiya and Varalakshmi Vratam bring smaller waves.

Beyond the festivals, a Lakshmi murti is the standard installation for a new business, a shop opening or an office, and a common griha pravesh gift.

Caring for the murti

• Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Marble is porous and does not need washing.
• No acidic cleaners — lemon, vinegar and bathroom products permanently etch polished stone.
• Wipe ghee, oil, kumkum and turmeric promptly. Turmeric in particular stains white marble quickly and is commonly offered to her.
• Hand-painted polychrome pieces should only ever be dusted dry.
