It is not interchangeable with a generic Ganesh murti, and the lion throne is the detail people check first. The lion throne is the form — not an accessory

If one detail separates a Lalbaugcha Raja murti from any other Ganpati, it is the throne, and it is worth being exact about because this is where lookalike pieces fall down.

The Lalbaug murti sits on a raised singhasan with a lion at each side, carved facing outward. They are not decorative armrests and they are not the mushak. The lions establish the murti as a king receiving petitioners — which is precisely the relationship the Navasacha Ganpati name describes, and why devotees bring vows to him rather than simply darshan.

The posture follows from it. Lalbaugcha Raja sits forward and upright rather than reclining, and the crown is tall and frontal. Get the throne right but soften the posture and the murti stops reading as Lalbaug; get the posture right without the lions and it becomes a generic seated Ganpati on a pedestal.

The trunk direction is the other question we are asked constantly. On the Lalbaug murti it turns to the murti's own left. It is carved that way unless you tell us your family follows the right-turned Siddhi Vinayak convention instead, in which case say so at the brief — the sculptor cannot change it once the stone is cut.

Natural marble, gold leaf, or polychrome

The Lalbaug murti is a dressed murti, so the finish decides how much of that dressing comes home with you. Plain marble leaves the crown, the ornaments and the lions to the carving alone, and it is the quietest option in a modern room. Gold leaf applies 22k leaf over the carved detail — crown, ornaments, throne — and is the closest to the murti as it appears on an ordinary darshan day. Polychrome takes the full traditional colour scheme, which is how most people picture Lalbaugcha Raja during Ganeshotsav, and is the most demanding to maintain. Decide the finish and the size together: polychrome needs scale to read, and a 5-foot murti in plain marble can feel undressed in a pandal.

Choosing the stone

Makrana white marble is the traditional ground for a Lalbaugcha Raja murti and the best base for gold leaf, which sits better on a dense, tight-grained surface. Vietnam white marble is cooler and brighter, useful for a larger throne piece that has to read across a hall. Black stone under gold leaf gives the strongest contrast and suits households who want something less conventional. Dholpur pink sandstone is available for a covered courtyard installation, and cast marble dust where a small murti needs to stay affordable.

Size and placement for a Lalbaugcha Raja murti

Nine to 15 inches suits a desk, a shop shrine or a compact ghar mandir. Eighteen to 24 inches is where most Mumbai homes settle, and the scale at which the lion throne and gold-leaf ornament start to read properly rather than crowd. Thirty inches upward wants a dedicated shrine room. The 3-, 4- and 5-foot pieces are hall, mandal and pandal scale — and note that a prabhavali arch or a grand throne adds width and height well beyond the figure, so measure the doorway and the ceiling and not only the plinth. Ganpati is conventionally installed facing east or north.

This is a genuinely seasonal murti. Demand for the Lalbaug form concentrates in the weeks before Ganesh Chaturthi, and a carved-to-order marble murti is not a stock item — the polychrome and gold-leaf pieces, and anything above 24 inches on a throne, need lead time for finishing after the carving is complete. If the murti is for a particular Chaturthi, start months rather than weeks ahead, and we will tell you honestly whether the size and finish you want is achievable by that date instead of accepting the order and hoping.

Caring for a Lalbaugcha Raja murti

Plain marble needs dry dusting with a soft cloth and nothing else. Gold leaf and polychrome take a dry cloth only — never damp, never a cleaning product, both of which lift the finish over time. Lift garlands off after use rather than letting them sit against the stone, since the moisture and dye are what mark it. No acidic cleaners on any of the stones: no vinegar, no lemon, no descaler.
