Statues commissioned for a space
A statue in a hotel lobby, a resort courtyard or a spa garden has a job to do. It closes a sight line, anchors a double-height wall, or sets the pace of arrival. So most hospitality pieces are commissioned rather than picked from a shelf: the scale, the stone and the finish follow the architecture and the design intent.
This collection is a working library for that kind of brief. Every piece is between 2 and 5 feet, the range that suits lobbies, courtyards, treatment-room corridors and reception walls. Treat each one as a starting point you can resize, re-proportion or re-finish to your drawings.
What is in this collection
- Seated Buddhas for lobbies and meditation spaces: the meditating Buddha in Makrana white at 4 feet, a black granite Bhumisparsha Buddha at 3 feet, and the Vitarka teaching Buddha in Vietnam white.
- Standing Buddhas for entrances and garden paths: the 5 ft teaching Buddha and the 5 ft blessing and gift-giving Buddha.
- Reclining Buddhas for long plinths and lawn edges, in black granite and Dholpur sandstone, both 4 feet long.
- Ganesha for arrival halls: a standing Ganesha in Vietnam white and its black marble counterpart, and a Ganesha beneath a carved arch for a feature wall.
- Shiva as sculpture: Nataraja in a ring of fire, a strong silhouette against a plain wall, and the Adiyogi bust in black marble for yoga and wellness spaces.
- Contemporary forms: a minimalist black Krishna, a contemporary Radha Krishna pair and a minimalist arc Buddha. These read as sculpture first and suit modern interiors where a traditional murti would feel out of place.
Choosing the subject for a public space
A hotel is not a temple, and the guests are not all devotees. A few rules keep the piece respectful and keep the project out of trouble.
- Buddha is the most widely used figure in hospitality, and the most often misused. Never place a Buddha on the floor, in a bar, beside a restroom, or as a head-only decorative object on a shelf. Many guests from Buddhist countries find that disrespectful. A full figure on a plinth, at or above eye level, is always safe.
- Ganesha is the figure of beginnings, which is why he so often greets guests at an entrance. He faces into the space, toward the arriving guest.
- Shiva as Nataraja or Adiyogi works as sculpture as much as devotion, which makes it a natural fit for yoga studios, wellness floors and spa courtyards.
- If the brand wants serenity without a named deity, the contemporary and minimalist forms carry the mood without the iconography.
Scale, weight and the floor it stands on
Scale to the distance the piece is seen from, not to the room. A 2 ft statue reads well on a reception counter, in a niche or at the end of a corridor. A 3 to 4 ft piece holds a lobby wall or a courtyard corner. A 5 ft figure is for a double-height volume or the end of a long garden axis.
Marble is heavy, so a large statue is a structural item as well as a decorative one. In this collection, a 2 ft piece weighs roughly 40 to 90 kg. A 3 ft piece can run from 85 kg to well over 250 kg depending on the stone and how solid the carving is, and a 5 ft figure in sandstone can exceed 400 kg. Share the floor build-up and the plinth detail early. You get the finished weight and footprint with the quote, so your structural engineer and contractor can plan the base, the access route and the lift.
Stone and finish for hospitality settings
- Makrana white marble and Vietnam white marble read clean and bright under lobby downlights. Vietnam white is the cooler, brighter of the two.
- Black stone gives contrast against pale floors and stone walls, and suits a contemporary palette.
- Dholpur pink sandstone is the outdoor stone. It weathers well in courtyards, beside pools and in gardens, and settles into a patina rather than staining.
- Cast marble dust keeps weight and cost down when the same small piece repeats across many rooms.
A matte or honed finish suits outdoor and poolside placements and high-traffic areas, where a mirror polish shows every fingerprint and water mark. Keep mirror polish for an indoor piece under controlled light.
What to send with your brief
A complete brief gets a firmer number faster, but a reference image and a height are enough to start.
- Reference: drawings, elevations, a CAD or PDF export, a mood board image, or a piece from this page.
- Dimensions: overall height, and the plinth or niche it must sit in, in feet and inches or millimetres.
- Stone and finish, or the look you want, and we suggest the stone.
- Quantity: one statement piece, a pair, or a set across several properties.
- Placement: indoor or outdoor, and site photos if you have them.
- Programme: your install date or opening date.
- Delivery: the city, and whether it goes to site or to a warehouse.
Caring for a statue in a busy space
- Dust with a soft dry cloth; for marks, use plain water and a few drops of pH-neutral soap, then dry it.
- Never use acidic or bathroom cleaners. Lemon, vinegar and descalers permanently etch marble.
- Brief housekeeping, because most damage in hotels comes from the wrong cleaning product, not from guests.
- Outdoors, rinse with plain water and keep the piece clear of sprinkler spray. Never pressure-wash carved detail.
