Handcrafted Vietnam White Marble Contemporary Radha Krishna Jugal Jodi, 30-inch

Vietnam White Marble comes out of the quarries around Thanh Hoa province in northern Vietnam, and it is the right stone for a piece this spare. Its grain is fine, crystalline and almost veinless — a clean, cool white with none of the warm cream of Makrana and none of the grey drift of a harder stone. On an ornate murti that evenness is a background quality. On a form reduced to two leaning silhouettes it becomes the whole surface: light travels down the drape line without a single mineral streak to interrupt it, and the pair reads as one continuous body rather than a patterned slab. Every piece in this design is carved to order for you by the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur, and a minimal form is the harder brief. There is no ornament to hide behind — a shoulder that sits a degree off, a plinth edge that runs long, and the eye catches it straight away. The block is roughed out, the two figures brought to their shared mass, then the lean between them refined by hand over several passes before the surface is worked up to a soft satin polish. Faces, hands and the flute are finished entirely by hand; nothing on this piece is machine-smoothed to its final surface. Jugal jodi is the Braj term for the divine couple taken as one — Radha and Krishna are worshipped together in the Vrindavan Vaishnava tradition, rarely as separate deities. This reading strips the pair back to two identifiers and trusts them to carry the whole: the bansuri at Krishna lips, the sound that draws the gopis of Vrindavan, and a single peacock feather in his crown. Radha is defined by one flowing drape line, her head inclined toward him. Jewellery, garlands and the lotus base are left out on purpose, which is precisely what makes those two attributes read. At 30 inches on its plinth the pair sits comfortably on a console table, a low sideboard or a base of its own in a room with modern lines. It wants a plain wall behind it — pale plaster, lime wash, unpatterned paint — because the silhouette is the piece, and a busy backdrop competes with it. Side light works better than a downlight: a lamp set slightly off-axis picks up the drape line and the shallow shadow between the two forms. A home mandir usually calls for a fully ornamented murti, so this design tends to live in the living room rather than the pooja room.
