The standing Buddha — presence rather than stillness

A seated Buddha invites you to sit with it. A standing one meets you. That difference is the whole reason to choose this form: standing figures work at thresholds, in corridors and in entrance halls, where a meditating figure would be wasted.

The mudras carved in this collection

On a standing figure the hands are doing something active, and the gesture is the meaning:

• Abhaya mudra — right palm raised outward at shoulder height. "Do not fear." The definitive standing form and the most ordered here. The natural choice for an entrance, since it is literally a gesture of protection offered to whoever approaches.
• Varada mudra — palm open and lowered, offering. Generosity and the granting of wishes.
• Abhaya and Varada together — one hand raised in protection, the other lowered in giving. The most complete of the standing gestures and a beautifully balanced composition.
• Vitarka mudra — thumb and forefinger touching to form a circle, other fingers extended. Teaching, reasoning, transmission. Right for a study, a studio or a school.
• Karana mudra — index and little finger extended, the warding-off gesture that expels negativity. Uncommon and very effective at a doorway.
• Namaskara / Anjali mudra — palms joined at the chest in greeting. The gentlest of the standing forms and an excellent welcome figure.
• Uttara-bodhi mudra — both hands at the chest, index fingers touching and pointing up, signifying supreme enlightenment. Rare, and striking on a tall figure.
• Walking Buddha — mid-stride, one hand in relaxed natural motion, robe flowing with the movement. Originally a Sukhothai form and one of the most sophisticated in Buddhist art: the figure has to appear weightless while being solid stone. Superb along a corridor or a garden path where it is seen from several angles as you move past it.

What separates a good standing figure from a poor one

Standing forms expose weak carving faster than seated ones, because there is more of the body to get wrong:

• The robe should fall with real weight and reveal the body beneath. Folds that are scratched-in lines rather than carved volume are the clearest sign of a rushed piece.
• The stance should carry a slight contrapposto — weight settled on one leg — rather than standing rigidly symmetrical.
• The raised hand should feel supported by the arm, not stuck on.
• And the face: eyes lowered, the faintest smile, calm without vacancy.

Also check the ushnisha rising as part of the skull, the elongated earlobes, and the urna between the brows.

Choosing the stone

Every piece is made to order. Tilak Mandirwala works in five stones:

• Makrana white marble — warm, dense temple white. The traditional choice and the most forgiving for a tall figure.
• Vietnam white marble — cooler and brighter, with a fine even grain that holds crisp robe detail and fine hands.
• Black stone — mirror-polishable and imposing. A tall standing figure in black stone makes a strong architectural statement.
• Dholpur pink sandstone — warm, matte, weathers well; the right choice for an unsheltered outdoor position. See the garden Buddha collection for outdoor pieces specifically.
• Cast marble dust — lighter and more affordable, and worth considering at height, since weight becomes a real installation constraint above four feet.

A matte or honed finish flatters robe folds; polish flattens them.

Size and placement

The pieces here run from 18 inches to 5 feet — this collection skews tall, because the form rewards height:

• 18–24 inches — a console, a shelf, an alcove.
• 30–36 inches — an entrance hall or a corridor end.
• 4–5 feet — a foyer, a stairwell landing, a hotel or office reception, a garden path. At this scale carving depth matters far more than surface polish, because the piece is read from across a room.

Two practical points. First, a standing figure needs clearance behind and around it — pushed flat against a wall it loses the three-dimensionality you paid for. Second, above about four feet, weight and base stability become the real constraints; a tall piece should sit on a plinth rated for it, not on a decorative side table.

Placement

• Face the figure east where the layout allows, or into the room.
• Never directly on the floor — a plinth, a platform or a raised base, always.
• Keep it out of bathrooms and shoe areas.

Caring for the piece

• Dust with a dry, soft cloth, working down the robe folds where dust settles.
• No acidic cleaners — lemon, vinegar and bathroom products etch polished marble permanently.
• For a sandstone piece outdoors, an occasional plain-water rinse is enough. Never pressure-wash carved detail.
