Abhaya mudra is the oldest gesture in Buddhist iconography — the right hand raised, palm outward, fingers together. It means do not be afraid. On a statue placed near a doorway or at the head of a path, it is a gesture aimed at whoever is arriving, which is why this form is so often chosen for a threshold rather than a shrine interior.

The stone is Makrana white marble, quarried in Rajasthan and the same stone used for the Taj Mahal. It is dense and fine-calcitic, with a brilliant natural white, subtle fine veining, and a slight translucency at thin edges where light passes a little way into the stone before returning. Left with a soft matte surface, it keeps chisel lines and robe folds honest — Makrana takes a high polish easily, and choosing not to apply one is what keeps the carving visible.
