Frequently Asked Questions

Where is your marble mandir shop in Jaipur, and how do I find it?

We are at Shop No. 19-20, 2nd Floor, Above Nehru Tailor Shop, Khajane Walon Ka Rasta, Chandpole, Pink City, Jaipur 302001 — inside the lane that Jaipur's marble sculptors have worked in for generations. Enter Khajane Walon Ka Rasta from either the Chandpole gate side or the Singh Dwar side and we are a short walk in, on the second floor above the tailor shop. By road it is about 950 m from Raj Mandir Cinema. The simplest way is to search Tilak Mandirwala on Google Maps and follow the pin, or tap Get directions — the lane is narrow, so most visitors park near Chandpole and walk the last stretch.

What are your shop timings?

We are open 8:00 am to 11:00 pm, every day — Sundays and public holidays included, right through the year. There is no weekly closing day, so you can come by after work or on a festival afternoon and still find someone on the floor. If you are making a long trip in, a quick WhatsApp before you leave is never a bad idea.

Can I visit the showroom before I order anything?

Yes, and we would rather you did — a mandir is much easier to judge in person than in a photograph. Walk in whenever you are in the Pink City; no appointment is needed. Nobody will push you to buy. If you are travelling from outside Jaipur and want to be sure someone is free to walk you through the floor properly, send a message on WhatsApp before you set off.

What will I actually see in the shop?

Marble mandirs at every scale, from an 18-inch canopy that sits on a shelf to a 72-inch two-tier shikhar temple for an entrance hall, with most home mandirs falling between 24 and 54 inches. A mandir is the structure, not the murti — the shrine the deity sits inside. Alongside them you will find the murtis that go inside one, and smaller marble pieces for the pooja room. The full range is on the marble temples collection, and everything is made to order, so the size is set by your alcove rather than by a standard.

What kind of work can be done on a marble mandir?

This matters more than the stone — two mandirs of the same size in the same marble can look nothing alike. Six kinds of work are made: plain carving (mouldings, turned pillars, a fluted dome, nothing added); jali, pierced lattice cut through the slab that glows when it is lit from behind; parchin kari stone inlay, the Agra–Jaipur tradition of setting malachite, lapis and carnelian flush into the marble; gold leaf, applied selectively to the dome, finial and pillar capitals rather than over the whole piece; silver cladding on the door leaves; and hand-painted polychrome over a coloured ground. All of it is carved for you by the master sculptors we work with here in Jaipur.

Which marble do you use for temples?

Two: Makrana white, the dense Rajasthan stone that takes the finest carving and is the traditional ground for inlay work, and Vietnam white, which is cooler and more evenly white so pierced jali patterns read sharply against it. Makrana warms slightly under lamplight; Vietnam stays crisp in daylight. Both are natural marble — we do not build mandirs in sandstone, granite or cast marble dust.

What sizes of marble mandir do you make?

From 18 inches up to 72 inches, and bespoke beyond that. When you come in or message us, bring the width, height and depth of the alcove or wall you have — and one more number that is forgotten more often than any other: how tall is the murti going inside. Internal clearance is set by the deity, not by the shrine, and a mandir sized beautifully to its wall is useless if the murti will not stand up in it. Allow for the murti's own chowki too. There are also two formats for homes with no floor to spare: a wall-mounted niche that projects only four inches, and a triangular corner mandir.

What does a marble temple cost in Jaipur?

Three things set the price, and nothing else really moves it: the stone you choose, the size of the mandir, and the work on it — a plain carved piece and an inlaid or gold-leafed one at the same size are very different commissions. Our range starts from around Rs 5,000 and goes up from there. Because every mandir is made to order there is no price list to publish, and no size or design is off the table: send us a photo of what you have in mind, along with the space it has to fit, and you will have a firm quote within a day — usually sooner.

How long does a marble mandir take to make?

Ask us before you assume, because there are two answers. Many pooja mandirs are already finished and waiting at the shop — nothing has to be carved for those, so within Jaipur they reach you quickly, often the same week. If you choose a design that is not ready, or want it sized to your alcove, allow roughly 10–20 days. A temple carved to your own brief is a longer commission. Heavily inlaid, gold-leafed or very large pieces take longer again — we will tell you the honest timeline when we quote, not after you have ordered.

Do you deliver across Jaipur, and outside the city?

Yes to both. Within Jaipur we deliver to your doorstep, and orders above Rs 10,000 ship free; the piece is packed in bubble wrap and assembled at your home by our staff. Outside Jaipur we crate and ship across India — marble is heavy and fragile, so tell us the destination early and freight is quoted with the piece rather than as a surprise at the end.

Where should a marble mandir be placed at home?

The north-east corner of the home is the traditional choice, with the person praying facing east or north. Keep the mandir off the bare floor — on a chowki, a platform or its own plinth — and out of a bedroom or directly against a bathroom wall. Beyond that, the practical constraints usually decide it: light, the wall you can spare, and whether the doors have room to open. Tell us where it will stand and we will design to that spot.

Which market in Jaipur is best for buying marble temples?

Khajane Walon Ka Rasta, in Chandpole — the marble sculptors' market and the main market in India for marble temples and murtis. It is where the karigars actually work, which is why the range and the prices there are what they are. Our shop is in that lane, and so is the sculptor network the pieces are carved by.

Can you build a custom mandir to my own design?

Yes — this is most of what we do. Bring a photograph of a temple you saw somewhere, a mandir from your family home you want echoed, a drawing, or just a description. We design it with you, brief the master sculptors, follow the carving through, and deliver it to your door. A reference you already like is usually the fastest route to something you will be happy to live with for decades.

What else do you make besides mandirs?

The murtis that go inside one — marble statues across deities and named forms, including Ganesh, Lakshmi–Ganesh and Radha Krishna — plus lamps, diya holders and other pieces for the pooja room, and non-devotional marble handicraft items such as urlis, trays and inlay work.

Do you accept online payments?

Yes — UPI and net banking both work, and you can pay in person at the shop. For made-to-order pieces we normally take a part payment to begin and the balance before dispatch.
