The form: one door, one dome

This 36-inch home mandir keeps to a single arched opening and a single fluted dome, and leaves it at that. The dome is cut with vertical flutes that run from its base to the neck and is topped by a turned kalash finial — the water-pot form that crowns temple shikharas across North India. Below it a moulded cornice steps out over four turned pillars, and the doorway is framed by a cusped multifoil arch of the kind Rajasthani jharokhas use. A hinged marble door closes the sanctum. The plinth is moulded in three steps with a scalloped skirt and stands on four squat feet. There is no inlay, no jali and no relief panel — the ornament is carried entirely by the profile of the mouldings and the turn of the pillars, which is exactly why the carving has to be accurate.

Why Makrana marble suits a mandir

Makrana marble is quarried in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, and it is the stone the Taj Mahal was faced with — worked continuously for centuries and still the default for Indian temple carving. It is dense and low in porosity, which is what matters in a mandir: milk, ghee, kumkum and lamp soot are part of daily worship, and a tight-grained stone takes them far better than a soft or porous one. Its colour is a bright natural white with the faintest cream undertone, and the grey hairline veining stays fine, so a plain-carved piece reads calm rather than busy. Installing it in a prayer corner

At 36 inches tall, roughly 16 inches wide and 9 inches deep, this mandir stands on the floor of a prayer corner or on a low wooden chowki, and it weighs about 54 kg — two people can move it, one cannot. It arrives fully finished, with dome, canopy, pillars and plinth dressed as a single piece, so there is nothing to assemble beyond setting it down level. Check the floor first: stone or tile takes the load without thought, while an older timber floor is worth spreading with a hardwood board. The sanctum is left empty on purpose. You place your own murti or framed photograph inside, and many households tuck a small warm LED strip behind the cornice lip so the light falls on the deity rather than glaring out into the room.

Sizing it for a flat or a pooja room

A 36-inch mandir is the size that actually works in an apartment. Standing on the floor it puts the sanctum at about chest height when you stand and at eye level when you sit down for aarti, which is the proportion most households ask for. It needs roughly two feet of clear wall and enough floor in front for one person to sit with an asan and a thali. In a dedicated pooja room it sits well against the east wall, so whoever is praying faces east or north. In a flat it will take a niche, the end of a passage or a corner of a bedroom without taking over the room — the plain carving is a large part of why, because there is no ornament competing with everything else around it.
