Marble mandirs for the home

A mandir is the structure, not the murti. It is the shrine the deity sits inside — dome or shikhar above, pillars at the corners, a back panel behind, and a plinth underneath. Buying one is a different exercise from buying a statue, because a mandir has to fit a room. Most orders here begin with a measurement rather than a photograph.

The collection runs from an 18-inch canopy that sits on a shelf to a 72-inch two-tier shikhar that stands in an entrance hall. If you are furnishing a whole prayer room rather than buying a single object, the pooja room collection gathers the mandirs, lamps and diya holders together; the figures that go inside a mandir live in marble statues.

The work on the stone is what separates them

Two mandirs of the same size in the same marble can look nothing alike, and the reason is almost never the stone. It is the work done to it. This collection is built around six kinds, and choosing between them is the first real decision.

Plain carving is chisel work only — mouldings, turned pillars, a fluted dome, a cusped arch, and nothing added. The 36-inch single-door dome-top mandir, the 18-inch chhatri canopy and the 72-inch two-tier shikhar are all this. It is the quietest option and it ages the best, because there is no applied material to lift or dull.

Jali is lattice cut straight through the slab, usually the back panel or the side walls. Lit from behind it becomes the brightest thing in a dark room — the 42-inch double-door jali mandir is built for exactly that, and the 24-inch wall-mounted niche throws the pattern onto the wall behind it in afternoon light.

Stone inlay, parchin kari, is the Agra–Jaipur tradition: malachite, lapis lazuli and carnelian cut to shape and set flush into channels chiselled in the marble, so the surface stays smooth to the hand. The 30-inch makar-torana mandir carries it across the back panel and plinth band; the 60-inch triple-dome floor mandir keeps it to borders, which is the restrained way to use it on a large piece.

Gold leaf works by contrast. On the 48-inch gold-leaf dome mandir the gilding is confined to the dome, the kalash finial, the pillar capitals and the arch border, and everything else is left plain — gild the whole thing and the marble stops reading as marble. The 48-inch corner mandir applies the same restraint to a shikhar.

Silver is the cooler equivalent, and it goes where hands and eyes land: the 54-inch mandir with silver-clad doors has repoussé work on the two door leaves inside a plain carved frame. Silver oxidises to a soft grey over the years unless it is lacquered, which some families prefer and some do not.

Hand-painting is the most colourful and the most personal. The 24-inch polychrome mandir sets painted floral work over a lapis-blue ground behind the arch, in the manner Rajasthani craftsmen have long used on marble.

Makrana white or Vietnam white

Mandirs are built in two marbles, and not in the darker stones used for statues. A shrine is read as a light-coloured object in almost every Indian household, and both these stones are dense enough to hold the fine pierced and inlaid work the structures depend on.

Makrana white is the historic Rajasthan marble — warm, close-grained and very dense. It takes the finest carving and it is the traditional ground for inlay, which is why the inlaid and gilded pieces in this collection are mostly Makrana. Under lamplight it turns faintly golden.

Vietnam white is cooler and more uniformly white, with far less veining. Pierced patterns read more sharply against it, so it suits jali work and pieces that will stand in daylight rather than under a lamp.

Sizing it to the room

The pieces run 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66 and 72 inches, and the right one is decided by the wall, not by preference. A shelf or a countertop takes 18 to 24 inches. A dedicated alcove or a console usually takes 30 to 48. A floor-standing mandir in its own pooja room starts around 54 and runs to 72, which is the practical ceiling for a single-block marble structure.

Two formats exist for rooms with no floor to spare. The wall-mounted niche hangs off the wall entirely and projects only four inches. The corner mandir is triangular in plan and tucks into the ninety degrees most rooms waste.

The measurement people forget

Send the width, height and depth of the alcove, and say whether the mandir stands on the floor or sits on a platform. Then send one more number that is missed more often than any other: how tall is the murti going inside it. Internal clearance is set by the deity, not by the shrine, and a mandir sized beautifully to its wall is useless if the murti will not stand up in it. A murti also usually sits on its own small chowki, so allow for that too.

Caring for it

Dry dusting with a soft cloth is nearly all of it. Keep acids away — lemon, vinegar, descaling liquid and most bathroom cleaners will etch marble permanently, and a diya spill of ghee or oil should be lifted with a dry cloth rather than washed. Gilded and silvered surfaces are wiped, not polished; abrasive cream will take the leaf off. Inlay needs nothing special, because the stones are set flush and wear at the same rate as the marble around them.
