Three domes, and the inlay that borders them

Three domes sit across the top of this mandir — a taller fluted dome at the centre, two smaller ones flanking it, each closed with a turned kalash finial. Below them the front opens into three pillared bays with cusped Mughal arches, so the shrine reads as one wide façade rather than a single narrow niche. The ornament that gives the piece its name runs as a border: slim panels of coloured semi-precious stone inlay, set flush into the white marble across the arch spandrels and along the plinth front. That is pietra dura — parchin kari, in the Agra–Jaipur workshops where it has been practised since the Mughal period — cut recess by recess and filled with carnelian, jasper and green stone. Vines, rosettes and small flowers read clearly against the white from across a room.

Vietnam white marble at 60 inches

Vietnam white marble comes out of the quarries around Thanh Hoa province and has been a standard export stone for statuary and architectural work since the 2000s. It is a bright, neutral white — cooler and cleaner than Makrana, fine-grained and crystalline, with only faint grey veining. That matters for an inlaid piece: the coloured stone stays legible against a cool white ground instead of sinking into a cream one. At this size the mandir is carved for you by the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur, who rough out the block, shape the domes and turn the pillars, chisel the arch profiles, then cut the inlay beds by hand and set each stone individually before the whole face is levelled and honed to a matte finish. It travels in numbered sections — domes, façade, plinth — and is assembled on site.

Installing a 60-inch floor mandir

A five-foot mandir is a fixed piece of the room, not something to move seasonally, so choose the wall before it arrives. It stands freestanding on its own plinth and needs no anchoring, but a level floor does matter — marble is unforgiving of a rocking base, and a thin stone shim under the plinth settles it. Allow roughly 39 inches of wall width and 18 inches of depth, plus clear floor in front for an aarti thali and for someone to sit. The plinth carries a shallow drawer for samagri — wicks, cotton, matchboxes, spare diyas — which keeps the shelf itself clear for the murtis. Many owners run a warm LED strip along the inner lip of the arch so the deity is lit from above with no visible fixture; the channel for it can be cut before delivery if you ask at the design stage.

Sizing it for a joint-family shrine

At five feet tall and a little over three feet wide, this is a mandir for a dedicated pooja room or a generous alcove rather than an apartment corner — it anchors the wall it stands on and wants around six feet of clear wall to breathe. The three bays are the practical argument for going this large: a household that keeps several murtis together, or a joint family where each generation has added a deity, can give each one its own arch instead of crowding a single shelf. It ships without murtis, so the arrangement stays yours.
