The chhatri form

A chhatri is an open pavilion — four pillars, no walls, a raised roof — and it sits on cenotaphs, palace rooflines and garden walls across Rajasthan, from the Gaitore memorials outside Jaipur to the terraces of Jodhpur. Shrunk to 18 inches it becomes a mandir with nothing enclosing it: four lathe-turned pillars carry a cusped arch on each face, the roof steps up in carved tiers to a lotus-bud kalash, and the whole thing rests on a moulded plinth with a scroll-relief band running around the front.

The open plan is the point. A murti placed inside stays visible from every angle instead of being framed by a single doorway, an aarti flame has somewhere to go, and the piece reads light on a shelf that already holds books and photographs. There are no doors to swing open in a narrow room.

The stone

Vietnam White Marble is quarried in Thanh Hoa province and has been a standard export stone since the 2000s. It comes out a cool, near-neutral white with a fine crystalline grain and only hairline warm-grey veining, usually under three percent of any given face.

That uniformity earns its place on a small piece. At 18 inches the carving sits at arm's length on a shelf, close enough that a strong vein pattern would cut across the scroll bands and the fluting on the pillars rather than sit quietly behind them. A calm stone lets the relief read.

The finish is a soft polish — satin rather than mirror. It holds a low, even sheen that will not throw a hard spot of lamplight back at you across a small room, and it leaves the chisel texture on the roof tiers and the arch spandrels legible instead of flattening it under gloss.

Sizing it for an apartment

Eighteen inches tall, roughly ten wide and eight deep, and about 22 kg. That footprint clears a standard 12-inch shelf, a study-desk corner, or the top of a low chest of drawers. The opening under the canopy takes a murti of about six to eight inches — a Laddu Gopal, a small Ganesha, a framed photograph of a guru.

Weight is the thing to settle before it arrives. Twenty-two kilos of marble wants a surface that will not flex: a solid wood shelf, a stone counter, a wall unit rated for it. A floating shelf on drywall anchors is not the place for it.

Leave four or five inches of clear air above the kalash so the finial is not crowded by whatever sits above. Traditional placement puts the mandir in the north-east of a room with the murti facing east or west. The temple ships without a deity — you install your own.

Make it yours

Every piece is made to order, so 18 inches is a starting point rather than a fixed spec. The same chhatri can be cut at 12 inches for a desk or taken up to 30 for a console, given a closed back panel if you want the murti framed against stone rather than the wall, fitted with pierced jali between the rear pillars, or carved with a family name along the plinth moulding.

It can also be worked in Makrana white marble, black stone, Dholpur pink sandstone, or cast marble dust if the room or the budget asks for a different colour.
