Swaminarayan murtis for the ghar mandir

Swaminarayan households are unusually specific about which swaroop they want, and the reason is that the tradition names them. Nilkanth Varni is the boy yogi of the seven-year walk; Ghanshyam Maharaj is the child; Harikrishna Maharaj is the form enthroned. A family that says "we want Nilkanth Varni" is not describing a pose, they are naming a period of Bhagwan Swaminarayan's life and everything that goes with it. Getting that right is most of the work on this page. All twelve pieces are carved to order by the master sculptors we work with, in the stone, scale and swaroop you name.

The swaroops carved here

Nilkanth Varni is the most requested, shown here in Makrana white, black stone and hand-painted, plus a 42-inch penance form for a larger shrine. Ghanshyam Maharaj, the child swaroop, comes standing at 18 inches and hand-painted seated. Harikrishna Maharaj on the throne is the ghar mandir centrepiece, also at 48 inches where a hall calls for it. The seated blessing murti is the general form, and Swaminarayan with the Shikshapatri shows him holding the text of precepts he wrote.

The tilak-chandlo, and why it is the first thing we get right

There is one detail that decides whether a Swaminarayan murti reads correctly, and it is small.

The tilak-chandlo is the sect mark: a U-shaped urdhva pundra in sandalwood with a round chandlo set inside it, on the forehead. It is carved, not suggested, and its proportions are exact enough that devotees notice immediately when they are off.

This matters more than it sounds, because the seated Swaminarayan swaroops are a genuine confusion trap. A seated figure in a plain robe, hands resting, eyes lowered, will read as a generic Buddha or a nameless ascetic to any sculptor who does not know the tradition — and that is exactly what mass-produced pieces tend to become. Three things prevent it: the tilak-chandlo, the turban or crown depending on swaroop, and the garlands. Together they place the figure unambiguously. We specify all three at the brief stage rather than trusting them to be inferred.

The seated Nilkanth Varni carries a second consideration. He is a boy — the swaroop is of a teenager on a seven-year journey across India — and the face has to be young. An adult face on a Nilkanth Varni murti is a common and quietly disappointing error.

Choosing the stone

Makrana white marble is the traditional choice for ghar mandir murtis in this tradition and the most requested here; it is dense and holds the fine tilak-chandlo edge. Vietnam white marble is cooler and brighter, which suits a smaller Ghanshyam Maharaj that needs to lift out of a shelf shrine. Black stone gives a much quieter reading and is chosen occasionally for a Nilkanth Varni where the family wants austerity rather than light. Dholpur pink sandstone suits a covered courtyard installation. Cast marble dust keeps a small home murti within easy reach.

Plain stone or hand-painted

The tradition is comfortable with both, and this collection shows both deliberately. Plain polished stone is the norm for a ghar mandir. Hand-painting — the ochre and saffron robes, the skin tones, the tilak-chandlo in colour — is closer to how the swaroops appear in temple murtis dressed for darshan, and it is what many families picture when they think of Ghanshyam Maharaj. Painted work asks for a dry cloth only and occasional touch-up over the years; plain stone asks for almost nothing.

Size and placement

Eighteen to 24 inches is the range most ghar mandirs settle on, and it is the right scale for the child swaroops in particular. Thirty inches suits a dedicated shrine room. The throne forms need more: Harikrishna Maharaj at 36 or 48 inches includes the singhasan in the composition, so the piece is wider and deeper than a standing murti of the same height, and the plinth has to take it. Above 40 inches you are furnishing a hall or a mandir. Tell us the niche and the direction it faces, and the murti is proportioned to the space rather than to a catalogue size.

Caring for it

Dry dusting is the routine. Lift garlands off rather than leaving them against the stone. Nothing acidic — no vinegar, no lemon, no descaler — on any of the stones. Hand-painted surfaces take a dry cloth only, never damp.
