About This Piece
This handcrafted statue portrays Nilkanth Varni — the teenage form of Bhagwan Swaminarayan during his seven-year journey across India as a young renunciant. Barely out of boyhood, he stands as the very picture of tapasya: a japa mala lifted to his heart, a kamandalu water-pot resting in his lowered hand, a deerskin draped over one shoulder and matted hair gathered into a topknot. The U-shaped tilak-chandlo on his forehead marks him unmistakably within the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. Carved from a single block of jet-black marble and worked to a deep mirror polish, the piece turns darkness into devotion. Where most murtis are rendered in white marble, this black-stone Nilkanth Varni is deliberately dramatic — the polished surface traces every contour of the young yogi's slender frame with a single ribbon of light, so the form seems to emerge from shadow. Each bead of the mala, the fine texture of the deerskin and the fingers curled around the kamandalu are shaped by hand by our network of master sculptors. At 30 inches, it is sized to command a living-room mandir or a dedicated shrine alcove without overwhelming it. Its restrained, monochrome palette sits as comfortably in a contemporary interior as in a traditional pooja room, making it as much a collector's sculpture as an object of daily darshan. For devotees of the Swaminarayan tradition, the Nilkanth Varni form is beloved as an emblem of youthful renunciation, discipline and unwavering faith. Placed where the household gathers, this murti invites quiet reflection each morning and makes a heartfelt gift for a housewarming, an initiation, or a milestone in a devotee's spiritual life. Every Tilak Mandirwala piece is made to order and quality-checked before it reaches you, then carefully packed and delivered to your door. If you would like this Nilkanth Varni in a different size, stone or finish, our team can curate a bespoke commission to suit your mandir.
