About This Piece
Ghanshyam Maharaj is the beloved child form of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, worshipped across the Swaminarayan Sampradaya as the boy who would grow into the founder of the tradition. This 18-inch murti carves that tender form in Vietnam white marble, quarried in Vietnam's Thanh Hoa province and prized for its bright, cool, even-grained whiteness that holds crisp detail in a small piece. The clean crystalline stone lets the child's rounded features, decorated crown and layered jewellery read clearly even at pooja-shelf scale. Each murti is shaped at TMW's Jaipur workshop through the full hand-carving sequence — rough cut, primary massing, then close detail work on the face, fingers, the small crown and the strands of jewellery. The face, hands and the lotus held in the palm are always hand-finished; no machine work touches them. Progressive hand-polishing brings the surface to a soft satin glow that keeps the marble's natural grain visible rather than a glassy mirror sheen. The boy stands in decorated royal attire with a small crown, necklaces and armlets, a lotus resting in one hand and the vertical U-shaped tilak with a round chandlo marked on the forehead — the Swaminarayan Sampradaya's identifying Vaishnav sign. Ghanshyam is shown youthful and serene, the child before he took the name Sahajanand Swami. He rests on a carved lotus plinth, keeping the murti elevated and complete as devotional pieces should be. At 18 inches the murti suits a home pooja shelf, a mandir niche or a devotee's personal altar — small enough to sit alongside other family deities yet detailed enough to hold the eye. It reads best against a plain wall with a little breathing space around it and soft daylight from the side. The compact scale also makes it a considered gift for a Swaminarayan household or a child-blessing occasion. TMW can carve this Ghanshyam Maharaj in other sizes, in Makrana white or black marble, or with a hand-painted polychrome finish for households that prefer coloured murtis.
