A Laughing Buddha caught mid-step, not seated

Most Laughing Buddha statues are seated. This one is caught mid-step — one leg lifted, both arms flung wide, head back and mouth open in laughter. It is the most kinetic form Budai takes, and it is a genuinely harder carving problem: the raised leg and outstretched arms mean the weight has to be resolved through a single supporting foot and the base, in a stone with no give in it.

The material is Vietnam white marble, cool-toned and fine-crystalline, with subtle low-contrast grain. Left matte with the natural surface showing, it keeps the chisel work visible across the swinging robe and the rounded belly. A polished finish would put highlights on every curve of a figure that already has a lot of movement in it; the matte surface lets the pose read cleanly instead.

Seeing a 30-inch Buddha in the round, and commissioning yours

At 30 inches it wants to be seen in the round, so a plinth in an open position serves it better than a niche — the middle of a courtyard, a turn in a garden path, or a sandstone-paved terrace where there is room to walk past it from either side. It is a welcoming, unserious piece, which suits an entrance or a place people gather rather than a meditation corner.
