Handcrafted Vietnam White Marble Radha Krishna with Cow (Venugopal Jodi), 3ft

Vietnam white marble comes out of the Thanh Hoa quarries in northern Vietnam, and it reads noticeably cooler and whiter than Rajasthani Makrana — a clean, near-neutral white with a fine, tight crystalline grain and very little of the grey veining that runs through most Indian marble. On a multi-figure grouping that difference earns its keep: a flat, quiet white surface lets the carved drapery, the garland beads and the calf's small features read purely as shadow, instead of competing with a busy stone pattern. The block for this piece is selected so that Radha, Krishna and the calf all come out of one continuous stone and share a single carved base. Every stage after the block arrives is hand work. The master sculptors we work with rough the mass out first, then bring up the primary silhouette — Krishna's tribhanga curve, the fall of Radha's sari, the calf folded down at the base — before a single detail is touched. Faces, hands, the flute, the crown feathers and the drapery edges are finished entirely by hand with chisel and riffler; no machine finishing goes anywhere near them. Polishing then runs through progressive grits to a soft satin, which holds light without turning the white glassy. Venugopal is Krishna as the cowherd flautist of Vrindavan — flute at the lips, weight shifted into the three-bend tribhanga stance, a peacock feather set into the crown. The calf at his feet is the attribute that names the form: Gopal means protector of cows, and in the Bhagavata telling the herd gathering to the sound of the flute is the whole point of the image. Radha stands at his left with a garland in her hands, which is how the jugal jodi — the divine pair — has been arranged in Braj-region murti carving for generations. At 36 inches on its shared base, the grouping is scaled for a home mandir with a dedicated platform, or for a temple installation seen from eight to ten feet away. Allow roughly 25 inches of clear width, and a plinth that brings the faces close to eye level — the tribhanga curve and the calf's upward gaze both read best when you are looking straight across at them rather than down. A garden-facing veranda or a naturally lit alcove suits the cool white; strong warm downlights will push the stone yellow.
