Handcrafted Bhainslana Black Marble Buddha Statue, Meditation, 4ft

Vajrasana: a Buddha in Bhainslana black marble

Vajrasana is the seated meditation posture with both soles turned upward and the hands resting in the lap: the pose of the Buddha at the moment of practice rather than of teaching or blessing. It is the most static of the major forms, and in a dark, uniform stone that stillness is the whole effect.

This one is carved in Bhainslana black marble from Rajasthan: a dense, near-black stone with no visible veining. That uniformity is the reason the material suits this pose. With nothing patterned to look at, the eye follows the silhouette and the robe folds instead, and the calm of the face carries at a distance in a way it would not against a busy stone. The finish is a deep mirror polish, so the shoulders, knees and the curve of the head take broad, clean highlights while the folds fall to black.

A 4ft black marble Buddha, and commissioning yours

At 48 inches it is a centrepiece: for a meditation hall, a lobby, the end of a long room or a covered courtyard beside a shallow water basin. Marble keeps a mirror polish best out of the rain, so for a garden choose a covered spot such as a verandah, a pergola or a courtyard under a roof. Dark stone reads best with space around it and light from the side; set against a pale wall, the outline does the work.

Every piece is made to order. This one is carved for you by our sculpting team. We develop the design with you, brief the sculptor, and follow it through to delivery at your door. The seated meditation form is ordered from around a foot for a home mandir up to well over life size, and in our other marbles too. Send us the dimensions and we will quote it.
