About This Piece

Why she is called Gaja Lakshmi

Gaja Lakshmi — Lakshmi of the elephants — is the form of the goddess most closely tied to abundance, sovereignty, and the blessing of a prosperous home. In this 24-inch murti she is seated in lalitasana upon a fully open lotus, four-armed and serene, her upper hands raised with lotus blooms while her lower hands rest in the abhaya (protection) and varada (boon-giving) mudras. Flanking her, two elephants rise on carved plinths and lift their trunks to pour ceremonial water over her — the abhisheka that gives this iconography its name and its meaning: nature itself anointing the source of all wealth.

Dholpur pink sandstone and its blush tone

The piece is hand-carved from Dholpur Pink Sandstone, a soft, warm blush-pink stone quarried and worked in Rajasthan's marble belt. Unlike the cool cream of Makrana white or the porous orange of Dholpur sandstone, this marble carries a gentle rose ground threaded with quiet grey and deeper-pink veining, giving the goddess a living, dawn-lit warmth that suits a devotional space beautifully. Each figure — the goddess, her crown and jewellery, the two elephants, and the tiered lotus base — is chiselled and hand-finished, then brought to a soft satin polish that catches light without the glare of a mirror surface.

A 24-inch murti for a home mandir

Standing 24 inches tall on a stepped, carved pedestal, the statue is sized for a home mandir, a pooja-room altar, or a dedicated Lakshmi shrine. It is a natural centrepiece for Diwali and Lakshmi Puja, and a considered gift for a housewarming or griha pravesh, where Gaja Lakshmi is traditionally invited to bless the new threshold.

How each Gaja Lakshmi is commissioned

As a made-to-order commission, Tilak Mandirwala works with its network of master marble sculptors in Jaipur to carve each Gaja Lakshmi to order. Natural stone means gentle variation in tone and veining from piece to piece — the mark of genuine hand-carved marble rather than a moulded cast. Share your size, finish, or placement preferences and we will curate the piece to suit your space.
