About This Piece

Seated in serene padmasana on a fully-carved lotus, this Mahalakshmi is cut from deep black marble — a dense, jet-dark stone prized for the near-mirror sheen it takes under hand-polishing. The colour reads as pure obsidian black rather than grey, giving the four-armed goddess a quiet, contemporary gravity that suits modern interiors as readily as a traditional altar. Black stone carries a long devotional lineage in Indian temple sculpture, where its darkness is read as depth and permanence. The murti is shaped at our Jaipur workshop through the full hand-carving sequence — rough cut, primary massing, then fine detail work on the crown, the layered necklaces, the beaded girdle and the petals of the lotus base. The face, the open palms and the lotus blooms are always finished by hand; no machine tooling touches them. A progressive polish, moving through finer and finer grits, brings the surface to its final mirror gloss so that light travels across the drapery folds in long, unbroken highlights. Mahalakshmi is shown four-armed: her upper hands lift blossoming lotuses, the flower most closely bound to her as the goddess of abundance and purity, while her lower hands rest in abhaya, the gesture of reassurance, and varada, the open palm of boon-giving. Padmasana — the folded lotus-seat posture — signals stillness and settled grace. Together the pose and gestures render the classic Diwali-puja form of Lakshmi worshipped across Vaishnava and household traditions. At 30 inches she is substantial without overwhelming a room — large enough to anchor a living-room console, a dedicated pooja niche or a lobby plinth, yet still a single-person lift for placement. The black stone pairs well with warm woods, brass diyas and soft directional lighting, which the mirror polish catches cleanly. Allow a plain, uncluttered backdrop so the silhouette and carved detail can breathe. Available in other sizes and stones — including Makrana and Vietnam white marble — with options for an integrated polished base or a discreet engraved inscription for housewarming and Diwali gifting.
