About This Piece
Lakshmi and Ganesh sit side by side here, each on a lotus throne, carved from a single grade of Makrana white marble — the stone quarried in Nagaur district, Rajasthan, and chosen by the Mughal builders for the facades of the Taj Mahal. Makrana has been worked for close to five hundred years, and it ages without yellowing. In this pair it reads as a warm, clean white, marked by the faint grey hairline veining of genuine quarry stone. At our Jaipur workshop the pair is carved together so the two figures mirror each other in scale and proportion. The rough blocks are shaped under heavy chisels; then the crowns, the four arms, and the lotus seats are brought out by hand. Faces and fingers are finished entirely by hand — no machine touches the detail work. The surface is left in a soft matte hand-finish that keeps the grain of the stone visible rather than glazing it under high polish. The pairing of Lakshmi and Ganesh is the central image of Diwali and Dhanteras worship across North India. Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and wellbeing, and Ganesh, the remover of obstacles, are shown side by side, each four-armed with their canonical attributes — the lotus and the kalasha for Lakshmi, the modak and the goad for Ganesh. Seated in Padmasana on individual lotus thrones, the two read as a balanced devotional pair rather than two separate idols. At twelve inches, this is a compact piece made for close quarters — an office desk, a shop counter, or a small home altar where a larger murti would crowd the space. It carries enough fine detail to hold attention up close, which is what a desk or counter placement asks for. The household shrine is traditionally set in the north-east, and the modest footprint makes the pair easy to place there on a shelf or in a pooja niche. Available in larger sizes and in other stones — Vietnam white marble, Dholpur sandstone, or a hand-painted finish with gold accents. Message us on WhatsApp for stone samples and sizing.
