About This Piece
A Lakshmi-Ganesh pair made to hang on the wall
Most Lakshmi-Ganesh murtis need a shelf, a chowki or a mandir to sit on. This one does not. The pair is carved in raised relief out of a single flat slab of Makrana white marble, 18 inches tall and about 15 wide, so the whole piece hangs flat against a wall the way a framed picture would: beside the main door for Diwali, above a console in the hallway, or on the wall of a puja corner in a flat that has no room for an altar cabinet.
Inside a cusped temple arch carried on two fluted pillars, Ganesh and Lakshmi sit side by side on open lotus seats. Ganesh holds a bowl of modak, his trunk curling to his left towards it, one hand raised in blessing, with his mouse vahana at the foot of his lotus. Lakshmi is four-armed, her upper hands holding lotus buds, one lower hand raised in abhaya and the other letting a stream of coins fall beside her seat. A kalash sits at the centre of the bottom border between rows of lotus buds, and floral scrollwork fills the spandrels above the arch.
Makrana stone in shallow relief
Relief is less forgiving than carving in the round: the figures stand only a couple of centimetres proud of the ground, so every crown, ornament line and finger has to be read from a shallow depth. Makrana marble, from the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, suits this well. Its grain is fine, compact and lightly crystalline, which lets a carver hold crisp edges at low depth where a coarser stone would blur them. The surface is left matte with the natural grain showing, so raking light from a doorway or a row of diyas picks out the carving rather than glaring off a polish.
Hanging it, and what can change
At roughly 3 inches deep and around 22 kg, the panel needs a solid masonry wall and proper fixings rather than a picture hook; we discuss mounting with you when the order is confirmed, and the slab can equally be set into a recessed niche. Keep it at or above eye level (a deity panel should never sit low on the wall), and a door-side placement traditionally faces into the home rather than out to the street.
The same composition can be made larger for a temple wall, set in a moulded marble frame, or carried with a Shubh Labh inscription or a family name along the lower border. It can also be carved in Vietnam white marble. Message us on WhatsApp with the wall size and placement you have in mind.
