About This Piece

A Diwali trio in Makrana white marble

Many families who worship Lakshmi and Ganesh on Diwali night also place Saraswati beside them, so that prosperity, auspicious beginnings and learning are honoured together at the same puja. This 15-inch murti set brings all three onto one carved lotus base in Makrana white marble, the stone quarried around Makrana in Rajasthan's Nagaur district and used for the Taj Mahal. Its fine, crystalline grain holds small detail cleanly, and thin edges such as fingers and lotus petals glow slightly translucent when a diya is lit nearby.

The three murtis and their attributes

Ganesh sits at the left end, as the deity worshipped first: four-armed, holding a bowl of modaks, his trunk curving to his left and his mouse vahana resting at the foot of his lotus. Lakshmi sits between the two, four-armed, her upper hands holding lotuses and her lower hands in abhaya and varada mudra, the gestures of protection and of granting boons. Saraswati sits at the right end playing the veena, with her swan (hamsa) beside her lotus. Each deity has its own lotus seat, set on a stepped plinth with a carved leaf border, so the trio reads as one piece while every murti keeps its own place.

How the set is carved and finished

The master sculptors we work with in Jaipur rough out the block by hand and machine, then carve the faces, fingers, crowns, jewellery and the veena's neck with fine chisels and files. These are always hand-finished. The surface is then polished in stages to a soft satin sheen, which is lustrous without the glare of a mirror finish and keeps the carved detail easy to read.

Placing the set for Lakshmi puja

At about 15 inches tall and 18 inches wide, the trio fits a standard home mandir shelf or a wall-mounted marble temple with a 24-inch inner width. Keep it raised on a chowki or shelf rather than on the floor. Many families face the puja area east or north. Makrana is a natural, slightly porous stone, so wipe kumkum, haldi and ghee away soon after puja and dry the murtis after any water abhishek.

Make it your own

The same composition can be commissioned in a larger size, in cooler Vietnam white marble, or with a family name engraved along the front of the base. Message us on WhatsApp with your shelf or temple dimensions and we will help you choose the right scale.
