About This Piece
Three deities for the night the new year's accounts open
Most Diwali pairs stop at Lakshmi and Ganesh. This set adds the third figure that a Dhanteras puja traditionally calls on: Kuber, keeper of the treasury of the gods. All three sit side by side on one carved rectangular base. Ganesh is on the left with a modak in hand, his trunk turned to his left and his mouse at his feet. Lakshmi sits between them on an open lotus, four-armed, lotuses raised in her upper hands and a stream of coins falling from her lower palm. Kuber sits on the right, broad and pot-bellied under a tall crown, holding a money pot in one hand and his mongoose purse in the other.
Why Kuber belongs on a Dhanteras altar
On Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali, households buy a new metal vessel, and shopkeepers and traders bless the ledgers and the cash box. Lakshmi brings wealth in, Kuber guards and keeps it, and Ganesh is worshipped first so the year begins without obstacles. Placing the three together on one base means the whole prayer stands in one spot on the altar, and the set stays in place for the Lakshmi puja on Diwali night itself.
Cool Vietnam white marble, finished to a satin glow
The stone is Vietnam White Marble, a bright, clean white that reads cooler and crisper than Makrana. Its fine, compact grain holds small detail well, which matters at this size: the coins in Lakshmi's stream, the beads of Kuber's necklaces and the petals of each lotus seat are all only a few millimetres across. A soft satin polish gives the surface a gentle sheen without glare, so the faces and jewellery stay legible under diya light.
Made to order in Jaipur
Tilak Mandirwala is a Jaipur curator, not a factory: each set is commissioned from independent master sculptors we have worked with for years, and carved by hand from one block, base and figures together. At 15 inches tall and about 20 inches wide, it fits a shop counter shrine, an office puja shelf or the main shelf of a home mandir. Size, finish and the arrangement of the figures can be adjusted, and pieces are crated for shipping across India and abroad. Send us the dimensions of your altar on WhatsApp and we will quote the commission.
