About This Piece
TMW's Ram-Sita standing pair is carved from Vietnam white marble — a fine-grained calcitic stone quarried in the Quỳ Hợp district of Nghệ An province and the Marble Mountain region near Da Nang. The stone reads as a bright, clean neutral white under daylight; cooler than the warm-cream of Makrana, never as cool as the blue-leaning Italian Carrara. Vietnamese marble has anchored the country's Buddhist statuary export trade for nearly 150 years, and over the past two decades it has become a working alternative to Makrana for Indian buyers seeking a brighter modern white at a mid-tier price. At our Jaipur workshop, the pair is carved as one composition — Ram and Sita are sized, blocked, and detail-worked in tandem so the two figures balance against each other in scale and bearing. Heavy chisels rough out the silhouettes; the faces, hands, mudras, and drapery are then finished entirely by hand using small drill points and progressively finer rasps. No machine-cut detail touches the face or the iconographic gestures — those are the parts a real carver always finishes himself. The composition follows the canonical north-Indian Ram murti tradition: Ram on the proper right, holding a long bow in his left hand with the right palm raised in abhaya mudra — the gesture of fearlessness and protection. Sita stands on the proper left, holding a lotus, a symbol of purity and grace. Their bearing is composed and slightly forward-facing, suited to a household altar where the pair is the focal point of daily darshan rather than a passing decorative element. A 30-inch pair is the sweet spot for a North Indian home pooja niche or a dedicated altar room — large enough to anchor the space without overwhelming a modest shrine. Vastu tradition places Ram facing east in the north-eastern (ishanya) corner of the household; the standing posture works well against a plain cream or white wall where the marble's natural translucency at the edges catches morning light. The piece is also a familiar choice for wedding gifting — the iconography of Ram and Sita as the model spousal pair carries deep cultural resonance. Available in Makrana white marble, Vietnam white marble (this pair), Italian Carrara, and black marble. Custom heights from 18 inches to 60 inches on commission. Engraved base inscriptions for installation gifting — share the text on WhatsApp and we'll size the letters for the piece.
