About This Piece

This 30-inch statue captures one of the most beloved episodes of Krishna's childhood in Vrindavan — the Kaliya Mardan, the subduing of the venomous serpent Kaliya who had poisoned the waters of the Yamuna. The young Krishna is shown dancing gracefully atop the many hoods of the serpent, one foot raised in a rhythm of effortless victory, his flute lifted to his lips even in the midst of the dance. The multi-hooded Kaliya coils beneath, its snake-heads bowed, while stylised waves of the river swirl around the base. Hand-carved from a single block of Makrana white marble — the same legendary Rajasthani stone used for the Taj Mahal — the piece is finished to a soft satin polish that lets the natural crystalline grain of the stone breathe. Every detail, from the beaded ornaments and the peacock-crested crown to the fine folds of the dhoti caught mid-motion, is worked by hand by master sculptors, with chisel and rasp marks softened but never erased. At 30 inches, the murti holds its own as a centrepiece on a home altar or in a dedicated pooja room, and is equally suited to a temple installation where devotees can circumambulate the dancing form. Its balanced proportions and elevated serpent base give it real presence without overwhelming a domestic shrine. The Kaliya Mardan is revered as a reminder that the divine dances lightly over every poison and fear that troubles the mind. Placed facing the household, this Krishna invites the same lightness into daily worship — a fitting choice for Janmashtami, a housewarming, or a collector seeking an iconographically faithful representation of the Vrindavan leela.
