About This Piece
Carved from a single block of Makrana white marble, this 30-inch Shiva takes the form of Pashupatinath — the Lord of All Beings, the compassionate protector who watches over every living creature. He sits in easy padmasana on a lotus base, eyes lowered in the half-open gaze of one who is both deeply withdrawn and fully present. In one raised hand he holds the damru, the small hourglass drum whose rhythm sets the pulse of creation; the trishul, his three-pronged trident, stands tall at his side — sovereignty, balance, and the three gunas held in a single stem. Every attribute of Mahadev is here for the eye that knows to look: the crescent moon nestled in his matted jata, the Ganga released from his coiled locks, the serpent Vasuki resting easy at his throat, the tripundra and third eye marked on his brow, rudraksha malas layered across his chest. This is not the fierce Nataraja of the cosmic dance nor the destroyer of the pralaya — it is the still, benevolent Shiva of the shrine, the one a devotee sits before at dawn. The Pashupatinath form carries a particular tenderness. At the great temple in Kathmandu he is worshipped as guardian of all that breathes, and a household that installs him invites that same guardianship over its own. Makrana marble — the stone of the Taj Mahal, quarried in Rajasthan and worked for five centuries — carries the carving with a brilliant neutral white that warms gently under a diya's flame and never yellows with age. Finished in a soft matte that keeps the stone's natural grain honest to the hand, the piece is hand-worked by Rajasthani carvers whose chisel marks and subtle left-to-right variation are left deliberately readable — the signature of a made object, not a moulded one. At 30 inches it holds a home pooja room or a modest temple with quiet authority, and arrives ready for daily archana or a one-time pran-pratishtha. Each Shiva is carved to order; grain, translucency, and the fall of the jata vary piece to piece, so no two are identical.
