About This Piece

Ardhanarishvara, Shiva and Parvati in one body

Ardhanarishvara is the composite form in which Shiva and Parvati are united in a single body, split vertically down the centre — the right half the ascetic Shiva, the left half the adorned Parvati. It is one of the most philosophically loaded images in the Hindu tradition, a carved statement that the masculine and feminine, the still and the creative, are two faces of one indivisible reality. This 30-inch piece renders that idea with unusual clarity, the seam running cleanly from crown to base.

The stone is Vietnam White Marble, prized for its bright, neutral, slightly cool white — cleaner and brighter than the warm cream of Makrana, without the blue cast of Italian Carrara. Its fine crystalline grain takes crisp detail, which is exactly what a subject this intricate demands: the matted jata and crescent moon on Shiva's side, the jewelled crown, earring and draped saree on Parvati's, the cobra curling over the shoulder, the strings of rudraksha and the layered pleats of cloth all read distinctly against the calm white surface.

Hand-carving and commissioning this 30-inch murti

Each statue is hand-carved by a single master artisan, finished to a soft matte honed surface that keeps the marble reading as stone rather than glass — no glossy sheen, just broad soft highlights and the faint tool signature of real handwork. Small asymmetries between the two halves are deliberate; they are the mark of a carved piece, not a cast one.

At 30 inches the Ardhanarishvara works as a temple installation, an altar centrepiece, or a collector''s art object in a living room or study. It is also a considered spiritual gift — a form that rewards a viewer who knows the iconography and quietly intrigues one who doesn''t.

Being natural marble, slight variation in veining and tone is expected from piece to piece; no two are identical. Dimensions are approximate and can be adjusted for a bespoke commission.
