About This Piece
The seated Ram-Sita pose on a Singhasan — the traditional throne form — captures the divine pair after Ram's Ayodhya coronation, both figures in quiet regal repose. We carve this pair in Vietnam White Marble, quarried in Thanh Hoa province in northern Vietnam. The stone has a clean milky-white cast — slightly cooler and more uniform than Makrana, with subtle light-grey veining instead of Makrana's faint amber-cream tone — and has been an export-trade marble for North Indian sculptors since the early 2000s. The Singhasan throne, the two seated figures, and the base are carved as one continuous block in our Jaipur workshop. The throne's lattice back panel and arm-rest detail are hand-chiseled — relief work that doesn't tolerate machine finishing. Faces, hands, the figures' draped attire, and the throne's inlay borders all see only hand tools. Hand-polishing uses a softer rotational grade than Makrana to preserve the natural cool clarity of the Vietnam stone. The seated-throne pose is the second of three canonical Ram-Sita forms — distinct from the Vivah (wedding standing) pair and the standing Ram-with-bow form. Ram is depicted with hands resting on his knees in classical sukhasana-on-throne pose; Sita sits at his left, hands in her lap or in a soft offering gesture. The Singhasan composition gained ground after the Ayodhya Ram Mandir consecration as devotees sought the post-coronation Ram-Sita form for home altars. At 24 inches the pair fits compact home altars and shrine niches that wouldn't accommodate the larger Vivah pair. Vastu places Ram murti in the northeast (Ishanya) corner facing east; a wooden chowki or carved marble plinth at chest level is ideal. The piece works well as a wedding-gift pair or for couples seeking a Ram-Sita murti more in conversation with the post-coronation devotional tradition. Available from 18 inches to 48 inches, in Makrana white marble for a slightly warmer cream-tinted alternative or Italian Carrara for a premium commission, and with optional hand-painted detail on the throne's backrest motifs.
