About This Piece
This Ram-Sita pair is carved from Jaisalmer Yellow Sandstone — the same warm golden-honey stone the 12th-century Jaisalmer Fort is built from, quarried in western Rajasthan's Thar Desert. The colour is unmistakable: a clear honey-gold under daylight, a deeper amber at golden hour, the same hue that earned Jaisalmer the name "the Golden City". Unlike marble, sandstone holds its warm chromatic character year after year and develops a softer patina outdoors. Each piece carries the subtle banding and iron-oxide freckles characteristic of authentic Jaisalmer stone — features, not flaws, visible across the Fort's own façades. At our Jaipur workshop, the standing pair is carved from a single block so the two figures stay tonally matched. The rough silhouette is roughed in under heavy chisels — torso, head, lotus base in successive passes. Drapery folds, Ram's bow, and Sita's lotus are then hand-worked with finer tools, where sandstone's softer mineralogy lets the carver capture detail that's much harder to coax from marble. Faces, hands, and base are always finished by hand — never machine-polished. The integrated lotus base is sculpted into the same block, eliminating the joint line that pieced bases show over time. The composition follows the classical North Indian Vivah Darbar tradition. Ram stands on the right, bow held in his left hand at rest, his right palm raised in Abhaya mudra — the gesture of fearlessness. Sita stands at his left, lotus cradled gently in her left hand. The arrangement matches iconographic conventions documented across longstanding marble-murti sources: Ram with the bow held vertically, Sita's lotus signalling purity and prosperity. The integrated lotus base centres both figures on a single pedestal, an architectural cue to the unity of the divine couple. At 30 inches the pair sits naturally as a home altar centrepiece — visually substantial without dominating a small pooja room. Vastu sources consistently recommend the northeast (Ishanya) corner for Ram Darbar installation; the honey tone of Jaisalmer reads beautifully against the soft morning light typical of an NE-facing shrine. The piece also suits a temple-entrance niche or a warm-toned shrine room. For outdoor garden placement, the stone weathers gracefully — Jaisalmer sandstone is the same material that has stood for centuries across Rajasthan, gaining a deeper patina with each season. Available in Makrana white marble, Vietnam white marble, and Italian Carrara on commission — message us for stone samples and pricing. Custom sizes from 18 to 72 inches. An engraved base is available for installation gifting; share the family name on WhatsApp and we will size the letters to the piece.
