About This Piece
Shree Swami Samarth of Akkalkot sits in serene darbar in this commanding 42-inch (3.5 ft) black marble murti — the beloved elderly guru-saint rendered as a bare-chested ascetic with a long flowing beard, a shawl slipping over one shoulder, forehead tilak, and the calm, luminous gaze that draws devotees to Akkalkot. The right hand rises in abhaya, the eternal gesture of fearlessness and blessing, while the figure rests cross-legged in sukhasana with an unhurried, majestic stillness. Behind him rises a hand-carved vat vruksha — the sacred banyan tree of the Akkalkot vat — its aerial roots and spreading canopy chiselled in relief across a full arched backdrop. This is the visual signature of the shrine at Akkalkot, and carving it in the same jet-black stone as the saint unifies the whole composition into a single darbar tableau rather than a lone figure. The piece is hand-carved from black marble and brought to a deep mirror polish, the finish that black stone alone achieves — light traces long, seamless highlights along the beard, the folds of the shawl, and the swell of the torso, so the form reads with quiet drama even in the low, focused light of a sanctum. Every chisel pass, the fine detail of the banyan roots, and the crisp steps of the plinth are the work of a master hand. Elevated on a stepped plinth, this is a statement-scale installation intended for a temple sanctum, a large institutional shrine, or as the central devotional centrepiece of a Swami Samarth math or seva mandal. Its size, its integrated backdrop, and the gravity of jet-black stone make it a focal murti meant to anchor a room and hold a gathering's darshan.
