About This Piece
The stone and the brass line
Black granite is an igneous stone quarried in south India and worked there for centuries — the same material behind the dark, mirror-smooth sculpture of the Dravidian temple tradition. It is dense, close-grained and non-porous, which is why it takes a deeper polish than marble and holds a crisp edge without chipping. On this desk set the sculptors we work with polish every outward face to a full mirror, then cut a single shallow channel around each piece and set a fine brass strip into it. The brass sits flush with the stone, so you feel one continuous surface under your hand and see only a thin gold line catching the light. Nothing here is painted or plated: the black is the stone's own colour, and the line is solid brass that warms and darkens slowly with handling.
What is in the set
Three pieces sit in the box. The pen stand is a turned cylinder about four inches tall with a deep well that takes a dozen pens or a pair of fountain pens upright. The card holder is a low upright slab with a cut slot along its top edge, sized for standard 3.5 by 2 inch business cards and heavy enough that pulling a card free does not drag the holder across the desk. The paperweight is a flat rectangular bar, ground level on the underside so it sits without rocking and finished on all six faces. Together the three weigh around two kilograms — light enough to post, heavy enough that each piece stays where it is put. The proportions are deliberately plain; the only ornament on any of them is the brass band.
The fitted box
The box is what turns three desk objects into a gift. It is a rigid presentation case, ten inches across, lined with a cream die-cut insert cut to the outline of each piece so nothing shifts in transit and nothing rattles when the lid comes up. The lid opens on its hinge and stands upright behind the base, which is how a set like this is meant to be handed over — opened once, in front of the person receiving it. For corporate orders the insert can carry a fourth recess for a pen or a folded card, and the inside face of the lid is the natural place for an engraved plate or a printed leaf with a company name and a date. Sets are wrapped boxed, so they can be handed over without repacking.
Ordering it as a corporate gift
Most enquiries for this set arrive in quantity — a leadership offsite, a founder's-day list, a run of vendor gifts going out in one week. Quantity is where the details get decided: how many, whether every box carries the same engraving or a different name on each, whether the brass stays a single band or becomes two. We design the set with you, brief the sculptors, check the pieces as they come off the polish, and follow the consignment through to your delivery address. Tell us your date early and we will say honestly which route fits it: if sets from this design are already carved, we send you photographs of the actual pieces and there is no carving wait, and a fresh commission runs four to eight weeks. Message us on WhatsApp with a quantity and a date for a quote.
