The stone: Dholpur pink sandstone

Dholpur sandstone is quarried along the Chambal in eastern Rajasthan, from the belt that supplied Mughal and colonial builders across north India for centuries. The pink shade is the one this Buddha is cut from — a warm, pale blush tone with a fine, even quartz grain and a soft matte surface that shows every chisel pass rather than hiding it under shine. Sandstone is a building stone before it is a sculpture stone, which is the reason this piece is specified for the open air: rain, dust and full sun are its ordinary working conditions, not a risk to be managed. It weathers slowly and gently, deepening in tone over years the way old Rajasthani stonework does. Unlike white marble, it will not glare back at afternoon light, so the carving stays readable from across a lawn at midday.

The mudra: what the earth-touching gesture shows

Bhumisparsha means earth-touching. It fixes one moment: seated under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, challenged on his right to enlightenment, the Buddha lowers his right hand past his knee and touches the ground, calling the earth itself as witness. That is exactly what is carved here — the right arm reaching down across the right knee, fingertips meeting the base, while the left hand rests open in the lap. It is the dominant seated form of the Mahabodhi tradition and of Pala-era Bihar sculpture, and it remains the most requested Buddha posture for outdoor installation because it reads as settled rather than remote. The face is finished by hand, as are the fingers and the folds of the robe across the left shoulder; the double lotus pedestal beneath is worked petal by petal.

Sizing it for a garden or courtyard

At 48 inches seated the figure stands roughly four feet tall and about two feet across at the knees, with a footprint near 24 by 22 inches once the lotus base is included. That is garden scale rather than altar scale: it wants eight to ten feet of clear ground in front of it and a plain backdrop — a hedge, a boundary wall, a stretch of clipped greenery — so the silhouette is not competing with detail behind it. Set it on a levelled plinth or a compacted gravel bed so water drains away from the base rather than pooling at it. East-facing placement, so the figure meets the sunrise, is the long-established orientation for a Buddha and works well in a courtyard where morning light rakes across the stone. In a hotel or resort landscape, this size holds a lawn corner or the end of a walkway on its own.

Making it yours

This is a design, and every part of it is open. The same Bhumisparsha form can be carved at two feet for a terrace or six feet for a resort entrance, in Makrana white marble, Vietnam white marble or black stone if the pink does not suit the planting around it, and with a plain square plinth in place of the double lotus. We design the piece with you, brief the sculptors we work with, and follow it through to the installation. On timing: a comparable piece may already be carved, in which case we send photographs of the actual statue and there is no carving wait — otherwise a fresh commission runs eight to twelve weeks.
