Handcrafted Dholpur Sandstone Reclining Buddha with Nature-Fused Base, 4ft

A reclining Buddha that grows out of its own base

What separates this reclining Buddha from a plain one is the base. Rather than sitting on a flat plinth, the figure emerges from carved root, pebble and earth textures that run the length of the piece, so the stone appears to rise out of the ground it rests on. It is a single block throughout — the transition from robe to root is carved, not assembled — and it is the reason this piece belongs in a planted setting rather than on a pedestal.

The form itself is the parinirvana: the Buddha lying on the right side, head resting on the right hand, the expression at ease. The stone is warm beige-pink Dholpur sandstone, quartzitic and fine-grained, with visible banding and the occasional iron freckle. Left matte, it keeps the distinction between the smooth robe and the deliberately rough base legible — a contrast that a polished finish would erase.

Planting a 4ft sandstone Buddha, and commissioning yours

At four feet it is designed to be planted into, not placed beside. It sits well at the edge of a moss bed, against ferns, or beside a shallow water basin where the carved pebbles at the base meet real ones. Set it low and let planting come up to the stone; the fused base is the detail that rewards that, and holding it above the greenery on a plinth defeats the design.
