About This Piece
Saraswati for a room full of books
This Saraswati is made for the places where learning happens every day: a school library, a classroom, a teacher's desk. She sits on a pink lotus, playing the veena with her front two hands, while her back right hand holds an akshamala and her back left a palm-leaf book. Beneath the lotus, the plinth is carved with open books and scrolls, so the base itself says what she presides over. Her face is young and calm, eyes softly lowered, with a small tilak and a gentle smile.
Vietnam white marble with a blue and gold border
She is carved at 18 inches from Vietnam white marble, a cool, clean white stone with a fine, even grain that holds crisp detail: the beads of the rosary, the strings and gourd of the veena, the pleats of the sari and the pages of the carved books. The stone is finished to a soft satin polish, so it glows rather than shines.
The painting is done by hand and kept to a few clear colours. Her sari stays white, edged with a deep blue and gold border that runs along the pallu and hem. The crown, necklaces, armlets and bangles are picked out in gold, the skin is given a warm natural tone, and the lotus is washed in soft pink. The book-carved plinth is left as plain white stone, so the piece still reads as white marble first.
Where she belongs
At 18 inches she has enough presence to anchor a library reading room or a school prayer corner without crowding a shelf or console. She is a thoughtful gift for a teacher, a principal or a school on its founding day, and a natural centre for Vasant Panchami puja, when students place their books and pens before her.
Each piece is made to order in Jaipur. If you would like a different height, a plain white finish without paint, or other colours for the border, message us on WhatsApp and we will quote for it.
