A panel that needs light to exist

Lit flat from the front, this 20-inch panel is close to blank — a pale marble square with a faint suggestion of movement. Lit from one side at a low angle, a field of soft dune ridges rises out of it, crests catching the light and troughs dropping into shadow. The relief is shallow throughout and never cuts deep, so the whole image is carried by the angle light happens to arrive at. Move the lamp and the dunes move with it.

Depth that varies continuously

The surface has no repeating module and no fixed relief depth; it climbs and falls continuously across the full width. That is a job for machine milling, which can hold a varying depth across a large surface far more consistently than a chisel can, followed by hand finishing to take out the tool witness and bring the whole face to an even honed texture. The stone is Makrana white marble, and honed rather than polished is deliberate — a gloss surface would throw specular highlights and flatten the relief.

Where it sits

A hallway, a stair wall, above a console, or behind a bed. It mounts on a concealed keyhole fixing and sits close to the wall. It wants a wall-washer, a picture light or simply a lamp to one side; centred downlighting is the one arrangement that will not work.
