A jharokha is the enclosed balcony window that projects from the face of almost every haveli in Jaipur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner. This one is 14 inches tall and stands free on its own plinth, so the whole typology — corbelled brackets underneath, cusped arch above, pierced jali filling the opening, and a small chhajja eave throwing its own line of shade — becomes an object you can walk around.

The jali is cut right through

The screen is not a relief. It is pierced through the full thickness of the marble in a repeating geometric pattern, which is what lets it do the thing a jali is actually for: break light into pieces. Set a tealight behind it on a dark surface and the pattern lands on the wall behind, several times larger than the piece itself. The stone is Makrana white marble, dense and fine-grained enough to hold the narrow bars between perforations without chipping.

Where it sits

It suits a console against a wall, a deep shelf, or a niche — anywhere it can be lit from behind or from one side. Because the back is finished as carefully as the front it can also stand free on an open sideboard. Nothing needs to be plugged in; a single tealight is enough.

Making yours

The jali pattern, the arch profile and the height are all yours to choose, and a matched pair for either side of a doorway is a common request. It is carved for you by the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur, who cut the screen before the mouldings so any flaw in the piercing is found while the block is still simple. Allow four to eight weeks, longer if the lattice is very fine.
